DCU’s ‘Lanterns’ Gets New Teaser — Trailer Release Date Announced
A new teaser for HBO’s upcoming DCU series Lanterns has dropped, giving fans their first glimpse at the show’s dark, detective-style take on the Green Lantern universe. The full trailer is set to be released tomorrow, promising a deeper look at the mysteries Hal Jordan and John Stewart will face.
Lanterns follows Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, a seasoned Green Lantern nearing retirement, and John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, a new recruit he is training. The pair investigate a murder in Nebraska, but the case quickly uncovers darker secrets and unexpected dangers.
According to showrunner Chris Mundy, the series blends superhero action with a suspenseful, investigative tone inspired by shows like True Detective and Slow Horses.

Chandler’s Hal Jordan draws inspiration from Sam Shepard’s portrayal of Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff. Mundy said, “Kyle has the dry wit and quiet confidence that is essential for Jordan. He makes you believe in the character’s experience and skill.” Meanwhile, Pierre’s John Stewart balances military discipline with artistic creativity.
Mundy added, “Aaron is a serious theater actor, yet he looks like he was built in a lab to be an action star.” Director James Hawes praised Pierre, saying, “He feels so forceful, so cool, so understated. He owns the screen.”
The series also stars Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, a devoted law enforcement officer, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a brash and unpredictable Green Lantern. Fillion described his character as “a little bit higher strung in Lanterns, and the last person you want in an emergency.”
Recurring roles include Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Nicole Ari Parker as John Stewart’s mother, with Jason Ritter, Sherman Augustus, and Paul Ben-Victor in supporting parts. Laura Linney and Paula Patton have also joined in undisclosed roles.
Lanterns is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, with Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King serving as creators. Filming took place in Los Angeles from February to July 2025. James Hawes directed the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also directing.
The series is part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters and will consist of eight episodes, set to premiere in mid-2026. With the teaser hinting at high-stakes drama and complex mysteries, Lanterns promises a fresh, darker take on the Green Lantern mythology.
This teaser shows the tone HBO is aiming for, blending superhero action with suspense and detective work. With the trailer dropping tomorrow, fans can expect a closer look at the story and characters.
Lanterns could be a game-changer for the DCU, offering a more grounded, story-driven approach to superhero tales. What do you think about this new take on Green Lantern? Share your thoughts in the comments.
