‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Director Shawn Levy Teams Up With Netflix for Mysterious New Sci-Fi Movie ‘Somewhere Out There’
Netflix has landed another major sci-fi project, with director Shawn Levy officially attached to helm the original movie Somewhere Out There. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix picked up the script after a competitive bidding war between studios and streamers.
The film is based on a script by writer Max Taxe and will also be produced by Levy through his production company, 21 Laps, alongside producer Dan Levine. The story is described as an emotional science-fiction drama in the style of films like Arrival and The Adam Project.
The movie follows a grieving father who is struggling after the loss of his wife. In an attempt to cope with his pain, he sends a message into space. Unexpectedly, something from deep in the universe responds back to him.
Levy continues to stay busy with several large projects already in development or production. He recently finished work on Star Wars: Starfighter, which stars Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre. That movie is scheduled to release in theaters on May 28, 2027.
Over the years, Levy has become one of Netflix’s most successful creative partners. He helped produce and direct episodes of Stranger Things and also worked on the limited series All the Light We Cannot See. On the movie side, Levy directed Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned more than $1 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.
Writer Max Taxe has previously worked with 21 Laps on another project titled Ripple, which currently has Jack Quaid attached to star. Taxe also wrote Moonshot for HBO Max, starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse.
Meanwhile, 21 Laps is continuing to expand its partnership with Netflix. The company is currently finishing production on the comedy One Attempt Remaining, directed by Kay Cannon and starring Jennifer Garner and John Cena. It is also wrapping work on an untitled hockey series starring Michelle Monaghan.
For now, Netflix has not announced a release date for Somewhere Out There, but with Levy attached and the project already gaining attention in Hollywood, it is likely to become one of the streamer’s bigger sci-fi releases in the coming years.
