A brand new Amityville horror movie is on the way, and it’s coming from the people behind Barbarian and Heart Eyes. According to Deadline, BoulderLight Pictures and Divide/Conquer are teaming up to make a fresh version of the famous haunted house story, aimed at a new generation of horror fans.

Directing the film will be Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the husband-and-wife duo known for their indie horror hit Deadstream.

They’re also writing the script themselves, but right now, the plot details are being kept secret. What’s known is that the producers are planning to get this movie moving fast, with hopes of starting production by the end of 2025.

BoulderLight Pictures, which worked on Barbarian, has a first-look deal with New Line Cinema. So, that studio will get the first chance to pick up the project. However, the film hasn’t officially landed at any studio yet.

What makes this Amityville movie different from the ones that came before is its connection to the true story behind the legend. The film won’t be tied to the original Amityville Horror movie or Jay Anson’s 1977 best-selling book, which inspired countless sequels and spin-offs over the years. Instead, it will focus directly on the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York.

The real story goes back to 1974, when Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his parents and four siblings inside the house. Not long after, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved in. They claimed to experience strange and terrifying events—cold spots, bad smells, ghost sightings, and unexplained noises. After just 28 days, they fled the house, saying the paranormal activity became too much to handle.

The Winters’ film will not retell the DeFeo murders or the Lutz family’s haunted house experience. According to Deadline’s sources, the filmmakers are taking a completely new angle on the house itself and its legend, which has now entered the public domain.

The Amityville Horror story has been a staple of horror cinema for decades. The first film, directed by Stuart Rosenberg in 1979, starred James Brolin and Margot Kidder and was a massive success. It made over $86 million at the box office on a small budget and kicked off a long-running horror franchise. Even today, Amityville remains one of the most recognized names in horror.

Joseph and Vanessa Winter became known in the horror world after their first movie Deadstream got great reviews at SXSW in 2022 and was released by Shudder. They also worked on a segment for V/H/S/99 called “To Hell and Back,” which played at the Toronto International Film Festival. They produce films through their company, Winterspectre Entertainment.

BoulderLight Pictures, best known for Barbarian, has worked on many other films like The Vigil, Becky, and the upcoming sci-fi thriller Companion. Divide/Conquer, meanwhile, has been behind some of the biggest horror hits in recent years, including M3GAN and its sequel, Freaky, and Totally Killer.

With such strong producers and the Winters directing, this new Amityville movie has a lot of horror fans curious. Production is still a way off, but it looks like the legend of 112 Ocean Avenue isn’t done haunting audiences just yet.

The news was first reported by Deadline.
