Destin Daniel Cretton Breaks His Silence on the Shocking ‘Wonder Man’ Cancellation, and Clears Kevin Feige’s Name

Marvel’s television slate has taken some unpredictable turns over the past few years, but few decisions have left fans as genuinely baffled as one recent cancellation that arrived at the strangest possible moment. For a studio riding an enormous box office high, the timing of the announcement felt almost contradictory.

Destin Daniel Cretton addressed the surprise cancellation of ‘Wonder Man’ directly in a new interview, revealing that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wasn’t the one behind the decision to pull the plug. The news came in the very same week that Cretton’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was breaking box office records, a jarring juxtaposition that only added to the confusion surrounding Marvel’s choice.

“I know Feige loves that show as much as I do,” Cretton told TheWrap. “It’s a bummer. I’m heartbroken about it. But I need to fully understand the why.”

Cretton didn’t hold back on how personally the cancellation stung, given how much he’d poured into the project alongside co-creator Andrew Guest. “I love that show to death,” he said in the same interview with TheWrap. “If it were up to me, we would be making that show. And I do believe that if it were up to Kevin, we would be doing that show.”

The cancellation caught nearly everyone involved off guard, particularly given that ‘Wonder Man’ had been renewed for a second season just a few months prior. Showrunner Andrew Guest previously revealed that contracts had already been signed and schedules cleared for the follow-up season, with the writers’ room set to begin work imminently before the sudden reversal.

Guest also made clear that Cretton’s increasingly packed schedule, including his commitment to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ had nothing to do with the show’s cancellation. According to Guest, the decision came down to an internal call made jointly by Disney and Marvel, one that reportedly left even the creative team struggling to understand what had shifted since the initial renewal.

That confusion is compounded by the show’s critical and audience reception, which had been notably strong. ‘Wonder Man’ currently sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and had earned an Emmy nomination, with fans praising it as a fresh, self-aware take on the superhero genre that avoided feeling like a retread of familiar Marvel formulas.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams alongside Ben Kingsley reprising his ‘Iron Man 3’ role as Trevor Slattery, the series followed a struggling actor navigating a superhero-saturated Hollywood while secretly possessing real powers of his own. The show marked Cretton’s second collaboration with Marvel Studios following ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ further cementing his standing within the franchise.

With no clear explanation yet from Marvel about what changed between the season two renewal and the abrupt cancellation, fans are left piecing together a story that even the show’s own creators say they don’t fully understand.
