Kit had been hoping it would be Margaret he would be reconnecting with, and now she is the one being sent behind bars, and while he is happy to be back with his brother, his freedom comes at a painful cost. The reveal recontextualizes nearly every relationship in Ransom Canyon, especially given how close Margaret’s affair partner was to her own daughter’s boyfriend.
How Sheriff Brigman Was Forced to Confront the Truth
Sheriff Brigman is torn on the decision he has to make, though he knows he has to do it, especially since his and Margaret’s daughter Lauren wants him to do the right thing once she overhears the truth. He is mainly torn because Margaret is sober and living outside of Ransom now as she gets her life back on track, but he still goes to arrest her.
For most of the season, the town, including Sheriff Dan Brigman, presumes Randall’s death was a tragic accident, while Staten Kirkland is insistent that something more sinister happened, and his determined pursuit of the truth leads him to discover more than one town secret. That relentless drive from Randall’s grieving father is ultimately what cracks the case wide open.
It is Margaret’s son-in-law figure Lucas who finds the vehicle, tying Margaret back to the crash and alerting the authorities in hopes of saving his brother Kit from a life in prison. The finale ties together nearly every major relationship in town, proving that Randall’s death was never the simple hit-and-run the community assumed it to be.
