Vincent D’Onofrio holds the Guinness World Record for the most weight gained for a movie role, and it all started with his iconic performance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film Full Metal Jacket.

The film follows a group of U.S. Marines through boot camp training, and D’Onofrio plays Private Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence, an awkward, overweight recruit who struggles to fit in with his platoon. Casting for the role was difficult, but D’Onofrio, then a relatively unknown actor, was eventually chosen.

For the part, D’Onofrio had to gain 70 pounds (32 kg), bringing his weight up to 280 lb (130 kg). The extreme transformation was not without consequences; the actor suffered torn ligaments in his legs during the process. After filming wrapped, he spent nine months returning to his normal weight.

D’Onofrio’s performance received widespread praise. Richard Corliss of Time called the film a “technical knockout” and said that D’Onofrio’s work, along with R. Lee Ermey’s, deserved an Oscar nomination. Roger Ebert similarly lauded the pair, stating, “These are the two best performances in the movie, which never recovers after they leave the scene.”

Despite some mixed reviews, Time Out London criticized the film for underdeveloped characters, D’Onofrio’s dedication remains one of the most extreme examples of physical transformation in Hollywood. His commitment to the role still stands as a record, and it showcases just how far actors will go to bring a character to life.
