‘Digger’ Star John Goodman (74) Is Still Struggling to Get Used to His Transformed Look After Weight Loss
For decades, John Goodman was one of those actors whose physical presence was part of the appeal. Audiences knew him as the imposing, warm and often explosive figure in projects from ‘Roseanne’ to ‘The Righteous Gemstones’. So when he began to shrink dramatically, the world noticed.
Goodman’s transformation has been a constant source of public chatter, from red-carpet photo galleries to grocery-store snapshots. At the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Digger’ in late September, fans again remarked that he looked almost unrecognizable. Through all of it, the actor has stayed relatively quiet about how it feels from the inside.
That changed this week. Appearing on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast with Josh Horowitz on Monday, Goodman admitted that he is still adjusting to the face looking back at him in the mirror. He called the experience weird and strange, explaining that he has always thought of himself as looking one way, and then he catches his reflection and does a double take.

What makes the confession land is how lightly Goodman delivers it. He said getting used to the new look is also fun, and he noted that there is a lot he is still adjusting to. It reads less like regret and more like a man genuinely surprised by his own reflection.
The 74-year-old also addressed the constant commentary about his appearance. He said he mostly ignores it, though he acknowledged that being in the entertainment business makes him fair game, up to a point. That is a measured stance for someone whose body has been dissected online for years.
He has described a similar disconnect before. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, he said he still feels like a fat guy, even as he enjoys being able to walk into regular clothing stores and buy things off the rack. Taken together, the comments suggest that his self-image is catching up more slowly than his body did.
Goodman, who at his heaviest weighed nearly 400 pounds, has lost around 200 pounds over the years. He revealed the scale of the change in a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, saying he approached it more slowly this time, with an emphasis on moving and exercising. That included boxing-style workouts like hitting mitts and bags and learning footwork.

Other accounts have added details. E! notes that he reportedly lost much of the weight after stomach surgery, and he has also said in a New Yorker interview that he had an operation on his stomach. Goodman has also credited portion control, and reports say he hired a trainer, cut sugar and began exercising regularly.
The change has come with side effects. He told the New Yorker that he turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under his skin, which leaves him cold all the time. It’s a reminder that dramatic weight loss, even when it is celebrated, can bring unexpected physical trade-offs.
On the podcast, Goodman also looked back at how his weight may have shaped his career. He said he was working enough, but he wonders whether he sabotaged himself, and he conceded that his weight probably did limit some opportunities. He framed it more as a mental battle than a matter of studios turning him away.
He also shared a story from ‘The Righteous Gemstones’, in which he starred from 2019 to 2025. When a scene called for him to appear naked, he told the production that his body was too messed up from losing so much weight. He said the crew eventually found a way to make the scene work without it.
There was a lighter note as well. Goodman joked that he is trying to take better care of himself, but that he keeps getting jobs, which keeps him busy. His schedule has stayed full in recent years, including his turn as the president in ‘Digger’, and he says the new energy helps because acting is draining work.
Weight-loss stories in Hollywood are often told as clean before-and-after narratives, with a triumphant ending. Goodman’s version is messier and more human. He is proud of the progress, but the adjustment is ongoing, and it is playing out on a very public stage.
His candor also gives fans a more complete picture of someone who has been open about sobriety and food struggles in the past. Rather than offering a polished makeover tale, he is admitting that the mirror still surprises him. That honesty may be the most relatable part of the whole story.
