Director Breaks Down the ‘Wicked: For Good’ Ending
irector Jon M. Chu says the heart of Wicked: For Good is about the choices each character makes when they are forced to face their own idea of reality.
He explains that figures like Boq and Glinda choose very different paths, noting, “we’re both good and wicked… every day we make a choice about which one we’re going to be.” That idea guides how the story closes and where each character ends up.
The movie’s final act begins after Elphaba’s staged “melting.” Believed to be dead, she secretly reunites with Fiyero, who survives in a scarecrow-like form thanks to her magic. With the people of Oz convinced they are gone, the two leave the land behind and head toward a far-off desert.
Chu says the filmmaking team once considered showing this wasteland as a harsh, frightening place. But he ultimately saw it as the opposite, an open horizon full of new possibility.
Back in Oz, Glinda tries to move forward after believing she has lost Elphaba forever. She confronts the Wizard by revealing a clue from Elphaba’s past that connects him to her family. Shocked by the truth and faced with the chaos his rule has caused, he steps away from power and leaves Oz. Glinda then ensures Madame Morrible is taken into custody, using the former teacher’s own harsh words against her.
With the Wizard gone, Glinda becomes the face of change in Oz. She reaches out to the communities across the land, announces Elphaba’s “death,” and invites Animals—long pushed out of public life, to return.
One of them, Doctor Dillamond, is even shown going back to the classroom. Glinda also begins taking steps to guide Oz more openly, positioning herself as a different kind of leader.
Her final moment in the film takes her back to the tower where Elphaba learned to master her own power. There, Glinda holds the Grimmerie, given to her by Elphaba before the staged melting, and begins a soft reprise of “For Good.” Far away in the desert, Elphaba pauses and looks back toward Oz, quietly joining the song. The Grimmerie then reacts to Glinda for the first time, glowing as it once did only for Elphaba.
Chu leaves one question open: whether Glinda now holds Elphaba’s magic or whether something within Glinda has awakened on its own. “Elphaba giving Glinda the book is her saying, ‘You know the power that you have,’” Chu explains.
But he stresses that the film doesn’t reveal what Glinda will do with that power. Instead, the ending suggests she has many paths ahead of her.
The film closes with Elphaba and Fiyero continuing their journey into the unknown, while Glinda stands in the warm light of the Grimmerie, ready to shape Oz’s future.
