Disney Blows Up an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Billboard in ‘9-1-1’ as Marvel’s Marketing Spreads to Primetime
With less than 2 months to go before its December 18 release, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has become the kind of movie that shows up everywhere. Fans have been scanning Disney properties for clues, and the Russo brothers’ crossover event has obliged by popping up in places nobody expected.
Earlier this month, viewers spotted a “Countdown to Doomsday” label in Ultron’s attic room during the ‘VisionQuest’ premiere. Disney+ has also built a “Countdown to Doomsday” collection of 15 movies and shows to watch before the film. The marketing machine is clearly running at full speed.
Now the promotion has landed on a network procedural, and this time it gets blown up. In the latest episode of ‘9-1-1’, titled “Fire in the Hole,” a billboard for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is destroyed as a volcanic emergency tears through Los Angeles. The shot is brief, but it gave Marvel fans yet another sighting to talk about.
‘9-1-1’ returned for its 10th season on ABC on October 15, with new episodes airing Thursdays and streaming the next day on Hulu. The season opens with an earth-shattering emergency that shakes Los Angeles, and episode 2 follows the 118 as they evacuate crews and bystanders from around the volcano, fearing another eruption.
One review noted that the billboard’s destruction works as a little nod to the Disney company, alongside a ‘Dante’s Peak’ reference from Chimney. It is a fitting piece of set dressing for a show about disasters in a major city. A billboard promoting a blockbuster is the sort of thing a catastrophe would plausibly flatten.
It is not the first time the film has appeared on the show. After the season premiere, a clip circulated of a Hollywood Boulevard street scene in which the El Capitan Theatre marquee prominently displayed ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ beside a Disney Store. The El Capitan is a Disney-run venue that has announced special screenings in Infinity Vision starting Thursday, December 17.

ABC and Marvel Studios share the same parent company, so a cameo on ‘9-1-1’ fits Disney’s wider strategy. Reports so far don’t confirm whether the premiere’s marquee shot was a deliberate promotional tie-in or simply a real-world detail captured on location. Either way, fans treated both sightings like free advertising.
The same week brought a more traditional push. During Game 1 of the World Series on October 23, a baseball-themed teaser aired on Fox, with Mister Fantastic throwing out a ceremonial first pitch at a retro ballpark. The sky then darkens over the field as Doctor Doom arrives, and the Avengers logo appeared over Milwaukee’s American Family Field against a green sky.
The promotional blitz comes with real numbers behind it. Disney said the film had $50 million in United States presales 3 months before release, and trackers now put worldwide presales past $100 million, which reportedly doubled that earlier figure. Advance sales are also reportedly outpacing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ at the same stage.

All of that attention rests on a film with a lot to prove. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with Thor appearing to lead the heroes alongside Sam Wilson’s New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wakanda’s protectors and Namor’s Talokan warriors. It is also being built as a true crossover event that finally puts the X-Men and the Avengers on the same screen.
It also has serious competition on its opening day. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens on December 18 too, in a head-to-head showdown that fans have nicknamed Dunesday. That makes every sighting, from a ballpark teaser to a billboard in the background of a firefighter drama, part of a larger fight for attention.
For now, the next episode of ‘9-1-1’, titled “Streets of Fire,” airs on October 29, and eagle-eyed viewers will likely be watching the backgrounds closely.
