Disney Reportedly Eyes Epic Games Acquisition – Could ‘Fortnite’ Become a Disney Franchise?
Disney may be setting its sights on the gaming world, with Epic Games rumored to be a potential target for acquisition. Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite, is not currently for sale, but recent moves suggest the company is preparing for major changes.
According to GameSpot, Epic is laying off over 1,000 employees, including some of the artists and developers behind Fortnite’s most iconic characters. One of those affected, Mike Prinke, was a terminally ill father battling cancer, and his family has reportedly lost his life insurance as a result.
Despite these layoffs, speculation about a Disney-Epic deal continues. Alex Heath, a tech reporter, told The Town that Disney’s senior executives are interested in buying Epic Games, though not everyone at the company is on board. “I think if Epic ever sold, if it ever decided to call it quits on being an independent company, Disney would be the most natural home for it for a lot of reasons,” Heath said.
Kevin Mayer, former Disney executive and former CEO of TikTok, echoed that sentiment in an interview with CNBC. He believes Epic Games would fit well into Disney’s portfolio. “I think Epic or some other video game asset would be a great addition to The Walt Disney Company’s asset base,” Mayer said.
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro is known to be a big fan of video games. He played a key role in Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games and Fortnite, and The Hollywood Reporter notes that D’Amaro plans to focus more on gaming and interactive experiences under his leadership.
Even if Disney does not acquire Epic Games, the company seems ready to make a major move in the gaming space. For now, it’s unclear exactly what that might look like, but fans and investors are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Disney buying Epic Games would be huge for both the gaming industry and the entertainment world. Fortnite could get new life under Disney, and the company could create experiences that mix games with movies and TV in ways we haven’t seen before. What do you think?
