Disney Reveals Jaw-Dropping Total Cost of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ – It’s Mindblowing

Disney has revealed the full cost of producing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the number is staggering.

According to Forbes, the total cost of the 2019 film reached $593.7 million, making it the third most expensive movie ever made.

The Rise of Skywalker, also known as Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, is the final installment of the nine-part Skywalker saga.

Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, the film was produced by Lucasfilm and Bad Robot, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they lead the Resistance against Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and the First Order, now allied with the resurrected Emperor Palpatine.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and many others. It premiered in Hollywood on December 16, 2019, and was released in the United States on December 20.

Despite grossing $1.077 billion worldwide, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2019, The Rise of Skywalker received mixed reviews from critics. It also received three Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing. It won five awards at the 46th Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film.

Previous reports had estimated the production budget at $416 million, but Disney’s newly revealed total cost, which includes marketing and other expenses, pushes the figure much higher. Forbes notes that this makes The Rise of Skywalker the third most expensive film in cinema history.

This new figure highlights the enormous financial investment Disney put into closing the Skywalker saga. It also explains the high stakes behind one of the most anticipated films in modern pop culture.
