Owen runs Claremont Pizza and initially plans to spend the exemption night with his girlfriend Malika, played by Maya Hawke, but Malika instead tells him she wants to spend the night with someone new, sending Owen out to find his own match for the occasion. Allie, meanwhile, sets out with her friend hoping to find a genuine connection rather than a forgettable hookup.

Their paths cross early when police interrupt one of Allie’s attempted encounters, leading the two to banter their way through a police station together before going their separate ways. Why Owen and Allie Don’t Hook Up Right Away

Despite the emotional reunion, the film does not have Owen and Allie consummate their relationship that same night, which has sparked plenty of conversation among viewers. Director Will Gluck rewrote the script specifically for Barbaro and Turner, saying that for romance it is all about wanting to spend time watching two people together, and not necessarily in bed but when they are simply talking with each other.

Gluck addressed this exact choice in an interview with the director explaining that Owen and Allie simply did not have much time left once they reunited, so acting on the moment physically would not have made for much of an experience. In Gluck’s words, “Well, first of all, they didn’t have much time left, so practically it wouldn’t have been a very fun experience. It’d be very quick.”

He said the more romantic gesture in his eyes had nothing to do with physical intimacy, describing it instead as Owen wanting to spend more time with Allie. Gluck singled out the line where Owen tells Allie he does not want the moment to end, referring to the two of them simply being together and talking, and noted that in that final stretch, Owen would rather spend his last eight minutes with Allie than having sex, calling it a choice of romance and love over the deadline driving the rest of the movie.

Do Owen and Allie Eventually Get Together for Good?

The good news for fans rooting for this pairing is that the story does not end with them simply talking at a lighthouse. Owen and Allie do eventually sleep together on the one legal day of the year, though notably not during the same year the majority of the film’s events take place.

In the final few moments, as the next one night of freedom follows, the couple finally seems to take things to the bedroom.
