‘Doc’ Season 3 Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Amy’s Past With Ben Comes Back to Haunt Her
Few network dramas juggle memory loss, hospital politics and romance as boldly as Fox’s ‘Doc’. The latest episode, titled “Great Expectations,” pushed nearly every major relationship at Westside to its limit, so this ‘Doc’ recap and ending explained breakdown walks through what happened and where it leaves everyone.
The series follows Dr. Amy Larsen, who lost 8 years of her memory after a traumatic brain injury and is still rebuilding her life, her career and her relationships. This season’s 22 episodes air on Tuesdays on Fox and stream the next day on Hulu.
The episode aired on Oct. 13 and opened with a hospital corridor conversation between Bonnie, an archaeology professor, and her ex-wife, Cece. Cece promised Bonnie she would recover, but Bonnie collapsed moments later. That scene set the stakes for the case that dominated the hour.
Bonnie has an inoperable tumor, and Amy and Ben struggled over how to treat her. The case became personal once it emerged that Cece was one of Amy’s former patients, someone whose life Amy had saved twice. Cece had no idea Amy had been demoted and lost her memory, and Amy ultimately came clean about that.
The two doctors disagreed on the right course of treatment, and Amy’s early plans backfired when Bonnie slipped into a coma. Michael stepped in to monitor her, and Ben, Amy and Michael eventually treated her successfully. One review argues that Amy’s approach was right all along, since Bonnie might not have survived had Ben operated.
The more lasting material came through flashbacks to medical conferences where Amy and Ben grew close before her accident. There was a clear romantic spark, but the professional history may matter more. Back then, Amy helped Ben with a clinical trial, yet she wasn’t satisfied with the results.
Now Ben wants to bring that same trial to Westside. That raises an obvious question about what happens if Amy remembers why she had doubts. Reviewers have speculated that the trial could become a major source of conflict between them, and some wonder whether Ben might bend the numbers to get the outcome he wants, though the show hasn’t confirmed anything of the kind.
Ben’s motivations may offer clues. One reviewer notes that as a third-generation cardiothoracic doctor, he carries the weight of legacy, and the flashbacks suggest he didn’t like the idea of someone eclipsing him. Amy’s returning memory flashes are also making her wary of him.

Jake’s storyline ran alongside the main case. He treated a heart patient named Johnny Parsons, who nearly died because of a surgical error, and he was determined to speak up. The responsible surgeon, Swanson, was fired.
The outcome didn’t leave Jake in the clear. His attending physician, Matos, was unhappy with how he handled things, and she called him out for cowboy behavior and for getting away with it because of his bond with Amy. With a tenuous new position in cardiology on the line, Jake is learning what working outside of Amy’s shadow really looks like.
The biggest personal development belonged to Sonya. She asked Amy to perform an ultrasound and learned she is 7 weeks pregnant. She decided to keep the baby, though she hadn’t yet told TJ.
In a conversation with Amy, Sonya admitted she worried TJ might stay with her out of obligation rather than love. When she finally told him, he said all the right things and offered his support. It’s a notable moment for Sonya and Amy as well, since Sonya trusted Amy with news she hadn’t shared with anyone else, a sign that their strained relationship may be shifting.
Another parenthood story unfolded at the fertility clinic. Gina and her wife, Wendy, learned that Gina has viable eggs, while Wendy doesn’t have the same option. Wendy was understandably frustrated and confronted Gina about making her wait so long to start a family.
Gina then asked Wendy to carry the baby, and the couple cleared up their misunderstandings. It’s a quieter resolution than the other storylines, but it gives Gina an arc that isn’t tied solely to Amy.
The season’s official description says Amy will keep confronting hard truths about her missing years and work to repair fractured relationships. With the clinical trial heading to Westside, Jake’s standing in question and 2 pregnancies in play, the episode leaves plenty of threads to pull.
Will Amy uncover the truth about Ben’s clinical trial in Doc Season 3?
