Doctor Strange 3 is moving forward at Marvel Studios, according to reports from Nexus Point News. The film has entered early development, three years after the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The report says Marvel is now searching for a new director to lead the next solo adventure of the Sorcerer Supreme.

The sequel had a complicated production. Scott Derrickson was originally set to return as director, and the project was described as the MCU’s first real horror-style film. Derrickson left due to what Marvel called “creative differences,” and Sam Raimi took over, with Loki writer Michael Waldron revising the script. COVID-19 delays also affected filming and schedules.

Elizabeth Olsen revealed that she found out only “three weeks before filming” that her character, Wanda Maximoff, would be the main villain.

She expected the story to continue from WandaVision. Raimi and Waldron made major changes during production, and the movie ended with a short scene introducing Clea, played by Charlize Theron, setting up Doctor Strange’s next adventure.

Nexus Point News adds that Benedict Cumberbatch is becoming more involved behind the scenes for Doctor Strange 3. The report says he is part of discussions about the new writer and director. Cumberbatch is reportedly interested in Sam Mendes, though Mendes is busy working on several Beatles biopics.

The outlet also notes that Marvel does not expect Sam Raimi or Michael Waldron to return for the third film. Filming will not start until Avengers: Secret Wars wraps, meaning production could be some time away.

Doctor Strange’s future in the MCU has been uncertain since the last movie, especially after neither Cumberbatch nor Theron appeared on the Avengers: Doomsday cast list. This left fans wondering if the story teased with Clea would continue elsewhere or wait for the next solo film.
