Thanks to a crack in their chimney and Jason’s engineering skills, they also devise a series of traps slung outside to catch wild animals and collect rainwater, even using meat from their dog Cass’s body after the family refuses to eat it themselves.

That level of detail comes from a screenplay that leans hard into real-world anxieties. The script, written by Matthew Robinson, keeps the exact nature of the force imprisoning the family vague until roughly an hour into the runtime, inevitably recalling the isolation of pandemic lockdown. It’s a choice that gives Ann’s arc, and the entire family’s arc, a grounded sense of dread even once the sci-fi elements fully kick in.

Speaking with Tudum, Leterrier framed the project around that same tension between comfort and terror. “The Last House challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity,” the director told Tudum, adding that the film is meant to expose the fragility of security and the fight to reclaim it.

Who Dies In ‘The Last House’ Alongside Ann’s Family?

Ann’s survival stands in contrast to a fairly high body count elsewhere in the story. The jogger from the film’s early scenes never resurfaces, and the family’s golden retriever, Cassidy, does not survive the years of scarcity inside the house. A neighbor the family had written off before the lockdown is also confirmed dead, though off-screen, and his boat is what eventually carries the Delgados to safety.

Beyond the family’s own circle, the wider neighborhood fares far worse. Though the family initially sees several neighbors through their windows toughing out the early months, starvation and hopelessness eventually cost most of them their lives. The only deaths witnessed directly on screen belong to Mrs. Richardson, the dentist’s wife across the street, and a woman who was trapped outside when the storm first set in.

Even the family’s trusted dog doesn’t make it to the ending. Cass dies after his heart medication runs out, and Jason ultimately puts him down as an act of mercy.

Ann’s Escape and the Ending’s Final Twist

The trap the family builds for the creature nearly costs them everything before it pays off. The creature floods the entire home in response, nearly thwarting the family’s plan and leaving them scrambling to breathe in the attic. Once Graham recovers the harpoon they’d set, the family disables the creature and traps it, though Jason’s demand that it let them leave goes unanswered as the house continues sinking from structural damage and flooding.

It’s Ruth who ultimately changes the outcome. Ruth begs her father to show the creature mercy, and when Jason does, the creature lets the family go free, slithering out to prevent others of its kind from harming them. Surrounded by other creatures, the one they’d just faced essentially signals to the others that the family is worthy of surviving, and the Delgados watch their home crash into the floor before finally stepping outside.
