‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is now playing in theaters, picking up in the immediate aftermath of the memory-erasing spell that closed out ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ That spell wiped Peter Parker from the minds of everyone he loves, including his girlfriend MJ and his best friend Ned, forcing Peter to navigate a world where the people closest to him no longer know who he is.

Star Jacob Batalon has weighed in on the ambiguity himself, acknowledging he doesn’t have a definitive answer for what’s happening in that scene. He said it seems intentionally open-ended, floating the possibility that it’s simply muscle memory kicking in rather than any deeper recognition of who Peter actually is, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Batalon did suggest there might be more to the moment than pure coincidence, describing a possible slight glint or glimmer of recognition in Ned’s final line. He added that the moment is really up to interpretation for everyone watching, calling it a cool nod that he hopes gets built on in future installments.

The film’s post-credits scene adds another wrinkle, revealing that Ned has built a tracking app called Spidey Tracker, which hints that a version of Spider-Man may currently be off-world, likely tied to the events of the upcoming Avengers sequel. Whether that detail connects back to Ned’s magical abilities or represents a separate storyline entirely remains to be seen.

For now, the mystery behind Ned’s handshake recognition stays unresolved, giving fans plenty to debate until Marvel decides whether to pick up that thread in a future ‘Spider-Man’ film.
