Does ‘Outer Banks’ Finally Give Fans the Rafe and Kiara Romance They’ve Been Begging for & Do They End Up Together?
Few “will-they-won’t-they” debates in recent streaming history have generated quite as much fan energy as the one surrounding Rafe Cameron and Kiara Carrera on Netflix’s “Outer Banks.” What started as a chaotic enemies-to-uneasy-allies dynamic in Season 3’s Barbados storyline snowballed into a genuine shipping phenomenon, with a surprisingly large slice of the fandom convinced these two mortal rivals were secretly destined for each other.
That speculation only intensified once JJ Maybank was killed off at the end of Season 4, closing the door on his romance with Kiara and reopening the question of where her heart might land next. Producers didn’t exactly discourage the theorizing either, with showrunner Josh Pate previously telling outlets that the writers planned to “explore” the Rafe and Kiara dynamic once the final season arrived, given how bonded Rafe had become with the Pogues by that point.
Now that Season 5 has wrapped, the answer to years of fan speculation is finally here, and it’s not the pairing shippers were hoping for. Kiara ends the series single, while Rafe’s romantic arc concludes with someone else entirely: Sofia, the girlfriend who’s stood by him through his messy, violent redemption journey since Season 4.
Rafe’s final stretch of the season sees him fully complete his transformation from spoiled Kook villain into something closer to an actual Pogue ally. He loses his fortune to Chandler Groff, gives Sarah and John B. shelter, helps with a botched weed-selling scheme, and reconciles with Sofia before proposing to her a second time, all while becoming a wanted man after Groff exposes his role in Sheriff Peterkin’s death.
During the hurricane-set finale, Rafe breaks Sofia out of police custody, and the pair make the choice to go back and save Shoupe after he becomes pinned beneath a fallen tree rather than leaving him behind.

That act of selflessness caps off his redemption arc. Rafe says an emotional goodbye to Sarah before sailing away with Sofia, with John B. telling him to “send them a postcard from Rio.” Sarah’s actress, Madelyn Cline, reflected on the bittersweet nature of that farewell, noting, “I think she’ll always love him. He’s her brother… but forgiveness, I think that’s going to be a long time coming.”
Kiara’s journey follows an entirely different emotional path. Her Season 5 arc is defined by processing JJ’s death rather than pursuing any new romance, culminating in a moment involving the Blue Crown where she asks it to bring JJ back to life. Instead of a literal resurrection, she experiences shooting stars and flashes of memories from their relationship, a moment Madison Bailey has described as offering enough closure for Kiara without needing anything more literal.
That sense of closure carries into the finale’s final moments, with Kiara dedicating a memorial bench to JJ as she moves forward with her own land, career, and future. It’s a quieter conclusion than a new romantic pairing would have offered, but one that keeps faith with the emotional weight the show placed on her relationship with JJ throughout the series.
Bailey herself has directly addressed the Rafe and Kiara shipping discourse heading into the final season, reportedly shutting down the theory with what’s been described as a “creepy detail” undercutting the romantic reading of their dynamic altogether. Combined with the finale’s actual pairings, it’s clear the writers never intended to go down that particular road, despite years of fans convinced otherwise.
For a fandom that spent multiple seasons debating whether Rafe and Kiara’s chaotic chemistry was building toward something more, “Outer Banks” ultimately chose separation over romance for these two. Rafe gets his fresh start with Sofia far from the Outer Banks, while Kiara finds peace on her own terms, closing out one of the show’s most persistent fan theories for good.
Were you disappointed that Rafe and Kiara never became a couple?
