Donald Glover Shares Health Struggles: Stroke and Heart Issues
Donald Glover opened up about serious health issues during his performance at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival on November 22, in Los Angeles.
The artist, also known as Childish Gambino, revealed that he suffered a stroke last year, which forced him to postpone and eventually cancel the rest of his The New World Tour. The concert was live-streamed on Amazon Music.
Glover shared what happened with fans, saying, “I was doing this world tour. I was having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there. And I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
He added that his first thoughts were about letting people down, joking that copying Jamie Foxx was a distant second concern. “The first thing I thought was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’ I know it’s not true,” he said.
After initially postponing the tour, Glover canceled the remaining shows to undergo surgery and focus on recovery.
He also revealed he had a heart condition, explaining, “I’d broken my foot… and they found a hole in my heart. So, I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery. They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys. And I’ve gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love seeing and performing for you guys.”
Now back in performing shape, Glover is set to reprise his role as Troy Barnes in the upcoming Community movie.
