Donald Trump Cheers CBS Cancelling Stephen Colbert’s ‘The Late Show’
Donald Trump took to Truth Social to celebrate CBS’s decision to cancel Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show.” Trump didn’t stop there, he also took shots at the other two big broadcast late-night hosts, Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon.
He wrote, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.”

CBS announced on Thursday that they were ending “The Late Show” because of “financial reasons,” even though Colbert has been one of the top-rated late-night hosts.
This decision surprised many, and people started wondering if the cancellation had anything to do with the upcoming merger between CBS’s parent company Paramount Global and Skydance. This deal still needs approval from the Trump administration.
Earlier this year, Paramount settled a $16 million lawsuit that Donald Trump had filed against CBS. Trump sued over a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris that he claimed was edited unfairly, though CBS had previously said the lawsuit had “no merit.”
Some Democrats, including Senator Adam Schiff and Senator Elizabeth Warren, have questioned whether CBS’s decision was influenced by politics. Colbert has been known for his sharp criticism of Trump for years, often making him the target of jokes and monologues on the show.
Fox News has been promoting Greg Gutfeld as a top late-night host, but Gutfeld’s show airs at 10 p.m. and is considered prime time, not late night. He doesn’t compete directly with Colbert, Fallon, or Kimmel.
In a statement, CBS executives praised Colbert’s work, saying, “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘The Late Show’ franchise in May of 2026. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television. This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”
Colbert found out about the cancellation on Wednesday night. During Thursday’s taping, he told his audience, “It is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it.” When the crowd booed, he added, “Yeah, I share your feelings. It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
Still, many people in the entertainment world are wondering if money was the only reason behind the decision.
Senator Adam Schiff spoke out on social media after filming an appearance on “The Late Show.” He said, “If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.” Fans and industry insiders are now asking if Colbert’s political jokes and commentary played a part in CBS’s decision to cancel the show.
The future of late-night on CBS remains uncertain, but the debate about politics and entertainment continues to heat up.
