Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Her Most Admired Co-Star
Drew Barrymore once opened up about her longtime co-star Adam Sandler and why she enjoys working with him on screen.
The two first teamed up in The Wedding Singer, a comedy that became a big hit and helped cement Barrymore’s status as a leading lady. She continued to find success with films like Never Been Kissed in 1999 and the first Charlie’s Angels movie, which earned over $250 million worldwide.
Barrymore reunited with Sandler in 50 First Dates, a romantic comedy about a woman with amnesia who must be won over every day by Sandler’s character. The movie was a huge financial success, nearly tripling its budget, and helped establish Sandler as her go-to co-star.
The pair worked together again in 2014’s Blended, and Barrymore has often praised their on-screen chemistry. Speaking to Andy Cohen, she said, “I mean, I love that Adam Sandler and I are so platonic, we’ve never dated, his wife Jackie is my dear friend, but I love being in films with him because I think we’re representing something bigger than, like, hot sexual chemistry. We’re representing, like, true admiration of another person.”
Barrymore isn’t the only actor to speak highly of Sandler. Jennifer Aniston has called him a “joy to work with,” noting his ability to make the entire cast feel comfortable and keep the energy light on set.
Steve Buscemi, who has appeared in multiple Sandler films, described him as “the kind of person who makes everyone around him better and funnier.” Even Sandler’s frequent collaborator Rob Schneider has praised him for being supportive and generous, especially when helping younger actors find their footing in comedy.
Since around 2020, Barrymore has shifted much of her focus toward producing and hosting her daytime talk show. However, she faced criticism in 2023 when she decided to continue filming despite the SAG-AFTRA Writers’ Strike. She later apologized on Instagram and postponed the show temporarily, but it has now returned and been renewed for a sixth season.
Barrymore’s comments underline the respect and trust she has for Sandler, highlighting how their partnership goes beyond romance or traditional on-screen chemistry. They represent a professional bond built on admiration and collaboration, which is rare in Hollywood.
