‘Dune’ Fans Get a Big IMAX Reason to Return to Arrakis Before the Trilogy Finale

Few modern franchises lean on the big screen like ‘Dune‘. Both earlier films used IMAX for their biggest set pieces, and director Denis Villeneuve has treated large-format presentation as part of the storytelling rather than a premium add-on. That history helps explain why every new IMAX announcement tied to the saga gets so much attention.

The build-up to the trilogy’s conclusion has leaned on that reputation. ‘Dune: Part Three’ is the first film in the franchise shot with both IMAX film cameras and IMAX-certified digital cameras. It is also set to feature 71 minutes of IMAX-exclusive expanded aspect ratio footage, and its 70mm IMAX tickets have sold out quickly.

Now moviegoers can revisit how the story began. ‘Dune: Part One’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’ are returning to IMAX theaters on November 13. The screenings will include a sneak peek at ‘Dune: Part Three’.

Exactly what the sneak peek will show hasn’t been spelled out yet. The pairing still makes sense, since it lets audiences rewatch the story so far on the largest screens available right before the finale.

Warner Bros. and IMAX have used this approach before. Ahead of ‘Dune: Part Two’, ‘Dune’ came back to select IMAX theaters for a one-day event that included an exclusive sneak peek of the sequel. Around the same time, ‘Tenet’ returned to IMAX for a week, with early footage of the sequel attached.

UK audiences are getting their own version. Cineworld is bringing both films back in IMAX from December 4 to 15, with tickets going on sale on November 13. Cinemas are clearly treating the first 2 chapters as an on-ramp to the finale.

The sneak peek arrives after a steady trickle of footage. The first teaser opened with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul holding Zendaya’s Chani, many years after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two’, with Chani pregnant. It also introduced Robert Pattinson’s villain Scytale, who sports a platinum blond buzz cut and matching eyebrows.

The story jumps ahead 17 years. Paul is now a ruthless Emperor who must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, new threats emerge and betrayal lurks in every shadow. Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem are all part of the cast.

Footage has also been used to drive IMAX demand. The opening sequence of ‘Dune: Part Three’ was attached to 70mm IMAX screenings of ‘The Odyssey’ at 41 locations worldwide. Those theaters were chosen because Villeneuve, like Christopher Nolan, shot much of his film for that format.

The re-release also works as a warm-up for a packed release window. ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens on December 18, the same day as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, a head-to-head that has been nicknamed “Dunesday”. IMAX has also scheduled insider screenings of ‘Dune: Part Three’ on December 14 and 15, ahead of the wide release.

For fans, the November 13 double feature is a way to catch both earlier films in IMAX before the finale arrives. The trilogy is short enough to marathon, and these screenings make that easier. Whether the sneak peek is a short montage or something more substantial, it will likely give fans a first look at how Villeneuve plans to close out the saga.

Will you be watching the double feature on the big screen?
