Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ saga is heading toward its grand finale, and the pressure has been building for months. ‘Dune: Part Three’ arrives Dec. 18, adapting Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and closing out the trilogy. The film is set 17 years after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two’, and fans have been waiting to see how Villeneuve wraps up Paul Atreides’ story.

Anticipation has been fueled by a steady drip of previews. In April, the first 7 minutes screened at CinemaCon, and World of Reel reported that reactions compared the opening spacecraft sequence to the Normandy assault in ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Warner Bros. also screened a rough cut of more than 3 hours internally, and the response there was reportedly very positive.

But the outside world has not yet seen the film, and that is what makes the latest update important. The first small group of outsiders has now watched it, and word has started to leak.

A new Variety report says that ‘Dune: Part Three’ held its first intimate screenings this past week, adding that early word is very positive. The post paired the news with striking character portraits from the film. According to Variety, sources say the film held its first intimate, small-group screenings, and early word is very positive.

The report appeared in Variety’s Golden Globes predictions, where the outlet is already factoring the film into its forecasts. Variety projects ‘Dune: Part Three’ to earn 4 Golden Globe nominations. It also notes that Robert Pattinson has 4 films in theaters this year, including ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’.

World of Reel noted that once a few remaining festival titles screen, ‘Dune: Part Three’ will be one of the last major Oscar contenders still unseen by the wider industry. The site argued that if the film is as good as it is hearing, Villeneuve’s time could be now. He has been nominated for Best Director only once, for 2016’s ‘Arrival’, and was snubbed for both earlier ‘Dune’ films despite their Best Picture nods.

The timing helps in a few ways. First, it feeds into a long awards campaign. Variety observed that ‘Dune: Part Three’ is more likely than Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to play in the early awards stakes, based on how Marvel has handled prerelease screenings in the past.

Second, it adds momentum ahead of a major box office showdown. Both films open Dec. 18, a clash fans have nicknamed Dunesday. Warner Bros. has said it chose the date first and is not moving.

Warner Bros. has leaned heavily on exclusive formats. IMAX has locked the film into a 3-week exclusive run through the holiday corridor, which leaves ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shut out of IMAX entirely. Insider screenings begin Dec. 14 in IMAX 70mm, expand to digital IMAX on Dec. 15 and open to other premium formats on Dec. 17, putting word of mouth in motion 4 days before the wide release.

World of Reel also noted that Villeneuve shot the third film on film, a departure from the first two movies, which were shot digitally. The site said the more organic aesthetic looks gorgeous in the latest teaser. That kind of visual shift could be part of why early viewers are so enthusiastic.

The numbers are already eye-catching. World of Reel’s early estimates point to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opening to $360 million to $400 million domestically, while ‘Dune: Part Three’ could reach $125 million or more. If it gets there, it would comfortably beat the $83 million that ‘Dune: Part Two’ made in its 2024 opening.

Presales have been notable as well. Reports cited by CinemaBlend said the 38 participating IMAX 70mm theaters were seeing dozens of opening-weekend sellouts. Looper also reported that the film had earned $10 million in wider pre-sale releases.

For now, these remain early reactions from a handful of people, not a full critical verdict. Reviews are still months away, and the film will have to live up to the expectations it has created. But early word from the first outsiders suggests the final chapter is on the right track.

The cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy and Pattinson as Scytale. Villeneuve intends the film to be his final ‘Dune’ installment. As the December release approaches, fans will be watching closely for more reactions.
