‘Dune: Part Three’ Unveils a Majestic New Look as Dolby Cinema Promises the Epic Conclusion

Warner Bros. has been remarkably deliberate in how it markets Denis Villeneuve’s final ‘Dune‘ film. Each wave of footage, character art and ticket drop has been staged to build momentum, and the studio has leaned heavily on the idea of an event best experienced on the biggest screens. The strategy has turned ‘Dune: Part Three’ into a premium-format showcase before most people have seen a single full scene.

The campaign has had a few distinct chapters. In March, character posters introduced an older, harder Paul Atreides marked by his reign, and a July trailer was accompanied by a poster showing Paul and Chani seemingly squaring off. Along the way, the studio has pushed the tagline ‘The Epic Conclusion,’ even though Villeneuve has said he doesn’t see the film as the completion of a trilogy.

The latest piece of art adds a new partner to the mix. Warner Bros. has revealed a new look for the film built around Dolby Cinema, with a poster urging viewers to discover the epic conclusion at Dolby Cinema ahead of the film’s December 18 release.

The poster is built around a striking image of power. A solitary figure (Chalamet) sits on a green, angular throne at the top of a vast staircase beneath a golden dome, flanked by robed guards, while a crowd of hooded figures gathers at the foot of the steps.

The composition fits the story’s central theme. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and is set nearly two decades after Paul seized control of the Imperium, with Paul now a ruthless Emperor facing the consequences of his reign. The throne imagery appears to underline that status, and it echoes a recurring idea in the marketing about the burden of power.

Dolby Cinema is a premium large format experience from Dolby Laboratories that combines Dolby Vision picture and Dolby Atmos sound with a signature auditorium design. It entered the ‘Dune: Part Three’ campaign in August, when a third round of presales added more IMAX 70mm tickets and, for the first time, Dolby Cinema and other premium large format screenings. That round also introduced Insider screenings, and the studio has continued to roll out dates across formats.

Warner Bros. is clearly keen to give moviegoers more than one way to see the film. IMAX will remain the centerpiece, with the movie holding exclusivity on those screens for 3 weeks, but Dolby gives audiences another high-end option, especially in markets where IMAX 70mm is limited.

The movie was made with big screens in mind. Villeneuve shot primarily on 65mm film stock, with some sequences captured on 15/70mm IMAX film and the desert scenes filmed in IMAX Digital. The result is a project that has been tailored for premium presentation across multiple formats.

The competition for those formats has become part of the story. Disney launched its own certification program, Infinity Vision, in April to help ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ compete for premium-screen dollars while ‘Dune’ holds the IMAX real estate. With both films opening on December 18, the fight for large screens has turned into a branding battle.

The studio isn’t limiting the campaign to theaters. A new attraction, ‘Dune: The Experience,’ opens November 20 in downtown Los Angeles and runs through December 20, offering giant sandworms, real props and the chance to sit on Paul Atreides’ throne. It’s a fitting companion to a poster built around that very image.

The film itself stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh as Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, Robert Pattinson as Scytale and Javier Bardem, with newcomers Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke. It opens in North America on December 18, with the international rollout beginning December 16.
