Fall awards season always brings a wave of striking red carpet moments, but few actresses have built quite as much anticipation around a single project as Florence Pugh has this year. The British star has spent the better part of two years attached to one of the most demanding literary adaptations of her career, and the promotional rollout has finally reached full swing. New photos of Pugh from a recent event, captured with makeup by longtime collaborator Alex Babsky, are the latest sign that her biggest fall release is nearly here.

Those images arrive as part of the promotional run for ‘East of Eden,’ Pugh’s seven-episode Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel. The actress recently stepped out for the series’ London photocall and screening, marking one of the final major press stops before the show’s premiere.

‘East of Eden’ is set to debut globally on Netflix on October 1, closing out a project that has been in development since Netflix first acquired the rights back in 2022. Written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, the series reimagines Steinbeck’s sprawling multigenerational saga of the Trask family, with particular focus on its central antihero, Cathy Ames, played by Pugh.

The adaptation carries special significance for Kazan, whose grandfather, Academy Award-winning director Elia Kazan, helmed the original 1955 film version starring James Dean. Rather than closely retracing that earlier film, which only covered a portion of Steinbeck’s novel, Kazan set out to build something far more expansive across all seven episodes. She described the appeal of doing so in a conversation about the series with Netflix’s Tudum, explaining that the full scope of the story gave her the chance to fall in love with all of its characters rather than adapting just a fragment of the book.

Pugh’s performance as Cathy Ames has already generated significant early buzz, with the character widely regarded as one of the most complex figures in Steinbeck’s original text. The official Netflix synopsis describes the series as a modern interpretation of the novel that shines new attention on Cathy as its “indelible antihero,” a role that puts Pugh at the emotional center of a story spanning multiple generations of the Trask family.

Pugh is joined by a notable supporting cast that includes Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, and Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, along with Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, and Ciarán Hinds rounding out the ensemble. Filming took place in New Zealand, with the series split between two directors, Garth Davis handling the first four episodes and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing the remaining three.
