Eiza González Almost Auditioned Her Way Into Star Wars Without Even Knowing It: ““I Didn’t Know What I Was Doing”

Before she became known for her roles in 3 Body Problem and Alita: Battle Angel, Eiza González had a surprising brush with one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, Star Wars. But back then, she had no idea what she was walking into.

Eiza recently shared the story on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s On Me. She explained that years ago, before she had a team in the U.S., no agent, no manager, no publicist, she went to an audition for a film she knew nothing about.

She read for the role several times, maybe three or four, and then got asked to sign something called a non-disclosure agreement, which she had never even heard of at the time.

After that, she went to a meeting and found herself face-to-face with J.J. Abrams. That’s when it finally hit her that she was auditioning for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Eiza admitted that she hadn’t watched Star Wars before, so the whole thing was a bit confusing for her. “I didn’t know what I was doing. I had no idea it was Star Wars until I walked in and saw J.J. Abrams. I was like, ohhh, this is big,” she said.

She didn’t say what role she was going for, but considering the time and the fact there weren’t many female leads in that movie, it’s pretty likely she was auditioning for Rey, the main character who was later played by Daisy Ridley.

Even though she didn’t get the part, the experience didn’t slow her down. Not long after, she landed the role of Santanico Pandemonium in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, which helped kick off her career in Hollywood.

The story shows just how unexpected the road to success can be. One moment you’re auditioning without even knowing what for, and the next, you’re building a name for yourself in a new country.
