Sony’s latest animated movie ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ did a great job in both critical and commercial ways. The movie received universal acclaim for its writing, animation, voice acting, and easter eggs. It managed to live up to the hype and its Academy Award-winning predecessor. While Sony is doing a really good job with their animated projects, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (without Spider-Man in it) is still struggling.

The franchise spawned three movies so far, out of which none were both critically and commercially successful. Two ‘Venom’ movies were commercially successful, but they received mixed reviews, and ‘Morbius’ was both a critical and commercial failure. The next two live-action movies that Sony is preparing for us are ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Madame Web,’ since ‘El Muerto,’ which was initially set to be released before ‘Madame Web’ before it was recently removed from Sony’s release schedule.

‘El Muerto’ isn’t canceled, just delayed indefinitely

At last year’s CinemaCon, Sony officially announced ‘El Muerto’ starring Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, professionally known as Bad Bunny, with the release date set on January 12, 2024. However, only half a year before the planned release date, the movie still hadn’t started production, which suggested that it had no chance of being finished on time.

Sony recently removed the project from its release schedule, which may have suggested that the movie was canceled. Some rumors even indicated that Bad Bunny abandoned the project as one of the reasons.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter‘s recent report, Sony removed the movie from the schedule to give it more time for additional work on the script. And since the WGA strike is still ongoing, it may take a while before Sony announces the next release date. The same report also mentioned that the professional wrestler Sasha Banks and Marvin Jones III were both in talks to join the movie.

Even though ‘El Muerto’ is only delayed for now, the fact that it entered development hell shows that it could take a lot of time for this movie to be made. If it ever gets made, that is. How long Bad Bunny will stay attached to the project is unknown. It remains to be seen how the development will go from now on, and by then, we are expecting ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and ‘Madame Web,’ which have already wrapped their productions.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ is set to be released on October 6, 2023, and ‘Madame Web’ on February 16, 2024. Jonás Cuarón has signed to direct ‘El Muerto,’ but the release date is currently TBA.
