Elle Fanning’s Effie Trinket and Iris Apatow’s Proserpina Get a Glam First Look in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’

Few characters in Panem are as instantly recognizable as Effie Trinket, the pastel-and-wig-loving Capitol escort. Elizabeth Banks made the role iconic across the original ‘The Hunger Games’ films, so anyone taking it over has big heels to fill. That challenge now belongs to Elle Fanning, who plays a younger Effie in the franchise’s next prequel.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘ takes place 24 years before the events of the first film. It begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. That year comes with a deadly twist: each district sends twice as many tributes, so 48 children are sent into the arena.

Now the film is offering a fresh look at Elle Fanning’s Effie Trinket. On September 29, Pop Base shared an exclusive new image of Fanning as Effie alongside Iris Apatow as Proserpina Trinket, with the film set to hit theaters on November 20. The photo shows the 2 women at what looks like a Capitol party, each holding a cocktail glass.

The styling makes the point. Apatow’s Proserpina wears bright red hair sculpted into glossy finger waves, paired with a light-blue top. Fanning’s Effie has blonde curls with a dark floral accent, a colorful printed scarf and a bold ring.

The pair are sisters in the story. Proserpina is Effie’s younger sister and a member of the prep team, and that is how Effie ends up as the District 12 stylist. She takes over from Magno Stift, played by Billy Porter, and plays a major role in marketing Haymitch to potential sponsors.

Proserpina also works alongside Vitus, played by Edvin Ryding, in the pre-arena preparation of the District 12 tributes. That makes the Trinkets a key part of the Capitol side of the story. In the book, Effie doesn’t play a huge role, but the trailer shows her many times.

Fanning was cast in May 2025. She has said that fans helped make it happen, telling MTV that the studio was being hounded online by people saying she should play Effie. She also called Effie her favorite character.

She has spoken about the process, too. Fanning told People that she took a lot of selfies while in costume on set, and she has said she saw costume designs early on and wanted to get the character just right for fans. She also confirmed that she talked with Banks.

The prequel has a stacked cast. Joseph Zada plays 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, and Ralph Fiennes plays President Snow. Kieran Culkin is Caesar Flickerman, Glenn Close plays Drusilla Sickle, Mckenna Grace is Maysilee Donner, and Jesse Plemons plays Plutarch Heavensbee.

There is also an appearance from the original films’ leads. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are reported to appear in an epilogue or flash-forward sequence set years after the main events. The full trailer dropped in September and did not show them.

Francis Lawrence directs, from a script by Billy Ray. The film began production in the summer of 2025 in Spain’s Somiedo Natural Park. It arrives on the heels of 5 films in the franchise that have grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide.

Fans now have a clear taste of the Capitol side of the story. Between the Trinket sisters’ outfits and the trailer’s bright colors, the film looks set to contrast the glamour of the Capitol with the brutality of the Games.
