Emma Myers Went Full Method for Minecraft Movie—Even Played with Jack Black, Shares Jared Hess
Emma Myers, the breakout star of Wednesday, has made big-screen debut in A Minecraft Movie, where she plays Natalie, a young woman thrust into the mystical world of Minecraft with her little brother. The movie, directed by Jared Hess, features Myers alongside stars like Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
Myers’ ability to tap into her character’s emotions, while staying true to the film’s whimsical universe, impressed everyone involved in the project.
According to director Jared Hess, Myers “just totally understood the world” of Minecraft. He added that it was evident from the start how deeply she connected with the game’s universe. “She and Jack Black were always playing ‘Minecraft.’ They were super Method,” Hess said, describing how Myers would immerse herself in the game on her Nintendo Switch, staying true to her role even when not on set.
Despite her quiet, introverted nature, Myers has proven to be a true professional in her acting career. “I think as an introvert, if you work in this job, you have to learn to — not necessarily put up a front — but to be an extrovert when you need to be. And I find that I’ve become so much more comfortable with that,” she explained.
Myers’ dedication to her role in A Minecraft Movie is evident not only in her performance but also in her physical preparation. She took on 90% of the film’s stunt work, including using props like swords and shovels, which was a thrilling challenge for her. “It was a challenge, but a good challenge. It was really satisfying to be able to do your own stuff and be like, ‘That’s me,’” she said, reflecting on her stunt experience.
Minecraft, one of the most popular video games of all time, offers infinite possibilities for players to build and explore. Myers, a fan of the game from a young age, spent hours building creative landscapes and fun puzzles.
Her personal connection to the game only made it easier for her to imagine the vibrant world of Minecraft on-screen, even when acting against green screens. “I played these games, so when they’re like, ‘The Iron Golem is up there,’ I knew exactly what it looked like,” she said.
Though filming A Minecraft Movie was a significant challenge, Myers found it to be incredibly rewarding. She had the unique experience of going from one major production to another, heading straight from the wrap of A Minecraft Movie in New Zealand to Ireland to film Wednesday Season 2.
Her chemistry with Wednesday co-star Jenna Ortega has been widely praised, and Ortega described their working relationship as seamless. “She makes my job so much easier,” Ortega said, highlighting their strong bond both on and off set.
