‘Eternally Yours’ Episode 1 Recap and Ending Explained: Why Max’s Shocking Death Changes the Blythe Coven Forever
CBS has spent years proving that a supernatural sitcom can find a big audience, and now the team behind ‘Ghosts’ is back with a new family comedy. ‘Eternally Yours‘ follows a vampire family in Seattle, and its premiere throws plenty at the wall in a single half hour. By the time the credits roll, the show’s central relationship has been turned upside down.
The series comes from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the showrunners who adapted ‘Ghosts’ for American audiences, with Trent O’Donnell directing the pilot. It premiered Thursday on CBS and streams on Paramount+ the next day. Here is what happened in the pilot, and what that twist ending means.
Charles and Liz Blythe, played by Ed Weeks and Allegra Edwards, have been married for around 500 years, and the romance has long since gone stale. Their daughter, Emma, is a vampire too, and she has fallen for a human named Max, played by Jaren Lewison. Max works as an investigator for the Social Security Administration and studies psychology, which is how he ends up in the Blythe house.
The household is crowded. Jesse, a fitness-loving vampire, is married to a human named Phyllis, played by Rose Abdoo, who is kept in the dark through regular mind wipes. Their twin sons, Henry and Mort, have very different gifts, with Mort’s main talent being that he can read the family dog’s mind.
The episode opens with Max visiting the family while investigating Jesse, who seems to have collected Social Security benefits since the program began. Liz sees an opportunity in Max’s psychology studies and asks him to counsel her and Charles. The session accomplishes very little.
Charles, meanwhile, decides the best way to rekindle his marriage is to kill Max together. Emma interrupts before it goes too far, and Max learns that her family are vampires. He heads for the door, but Liz urges him not to give up on Emma, reminding him that her own romance with Charles once faced opposition.
Max then stands up to Charles and says he wants to stay with Emma, and Charles appears to relent. For a few minutes, it looks like the episode will end on a sweet note about love surviving family drama.
Then comes the twist. While practicing his powers, Mort accidentally hits Max with a bust of Charles, and Max dies. Charles then saves him by turning him into a vampire, which means he now joins the coven.
On paper, it solves Charles’s biggest objection, since his daughter is no longer dating a human. It also leaves Phyllis as the only remaining human in the household. Speaking to TheWrap, Wiseman said the coven’s rule is “You break it, you buy it,” which explains why Max is taken in, and he called it a very big change for the show.
Wiseman also said the show intentionally leaves vague how long it has been since the coven last turned someone. He added that Max’s new perspective will prompt questions about how the coven operates. The creators also say they would love a crossover with ‘Ghosts’, with Wiseman joking that the vampires could simply visit the ghosts since they are able to leave the house.
That kind of crossover talk gives the show extra buzz. ‘Ghosts’ is heading into its sixth season, and the creators already consider the two shows a shared universe.

Early reviews are mixed but intrigued. One reviewer gave the premiere 3.5 out of 5, praising the chemistry between Weeks and Edwards while noting that the exposition can be heavy and that the tone leans more melodramatic than sitcom. Another called the twist bold and unpredictable, but worried it might push the premise too far, too early.
Others were less convinced. One recap found the episode pretty middle-of-the-road and wished it had been funnier, though it saw potential in the twins’ mismatched powers and the dog-mind-reading gag. A preview review also compared it to ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, while saying it has a brighter network tone.
The twist gives the series a clear direction. Max has gone from a human outsider investigating a fraud to a permanent member of the family, and that opens the door to new tensions with Charles and the rest of the coven. It also raises the stakes for Emma, who now has a boyfriend who is stuck with her for eternity.
The show airs Thursdays on CBS, with Jeff Hiller set to guest star in an episode on Oct. 22. If the pilot proves anything, it’s that this vampire family has plenty of drama left to sink its teeth into.
Was turning Max into a vampire the right move in Eternally Yours?
