Halloween episodes are a rite of passage for any supernatural sitcom, and ‘Eternally Yours‘ has now taken its first turn at the holiday. The CBS comedy from the creators of ‘Ghosts’ follows Charles and Liz, a vampire couple whose marriage has gone a little cold after 500 years. This week’s installment tests that marriage and the coven’s safety in the same night.

For a family of vampires, Halloween is less a party than a hazard. Costumes let werewolves walk among humans without drawing a second glance, and attacks reportedly spike on the holiday. The coven would rather stay in and keep every limb attached.

The episode opens in 1649, with Charles and Liz arriving late to a Halloween party and finding several dead vampires. One of them, barely clinging on, says werewolves attacked and tells them to find the Wolfsbane Chalice. That cold open sets up the stakes for the present day.

In the present day, the chalice is the only thing keeping werewolves out of the coven’s house. Baby vampire Max is still learning the rules, and he sets the relic out as a candy bowl for trick-or-treaters. It promptly goes missing, and Jesse and Emma start to panic.

The panic gets a second layer when Mort’s date arrives. A girl from school named McKenzie asks him out and turns up in a werewolf costume. The housemates test her with keys and a tennis ball, then throw her out, only to find she isn’t a werewolf and seems to like Mort. The two bond over their unusual families.

The missing chalice turns out to have a mundane explanation. Phyllis found it outside and decided it would make a fine holder for her Halloween sangria. She walks back in with it just as McKenzie is being shown the door.

The real twist comes the next morning, when Phyllis takes the chalice out of the dishwasher. It wasn’t dishwasher-safe, and it has cracked in two. That is the ending explained: the one artifact shielding the house from werewolves is now broken, which suggests a future episode could put the coven in real danger.

While the coven hunts for the chalice, Liz is trying to land a promotion at work. She invites her boss, Glen, and his wife, Susan, over for drinks. The couple arrives dressed as vampires and starts spouting stereotypes, which is a lot to ask of a man who has been a vampire for centuries.

Charles can’t hold it together. He picks apart everything Glen says, and Liz comes close to losing the promotion she wants. The fight afterward is less about a dinner than about whether one partner’s goals should matter to the other when you have forever to chase them.

Allegra Edwards sees the argument as the heart of the story. She told TheWrap that the episode raises the question “what matters to me should matter to you,” and asks what it means about the couple if it doesn’t. She added that there is “something really beautiful” in how they work through it.

Edwards also explained to TV Insider why Charles blows up, calling the build-up “death by a thousand paper cuts.” Charles, who has seen centuries of promotions and dinners with the boss, struggles to see why one more job matters. Liz is experiencing it as a modern woman with a career, so to her it matters a great deal.

Charles redeems himself in the most vampire way possible. He turns into a bat, brings Glen and Susan back to the house, and makes amends. He charms Glen, the night is saved, and the couple shares their first intimate evening in quite some time.

That moment gives a marriage that has been fizzling for centuries some hope. Edwards winked at the idea that it “bodes very, very well,” and called it a “very positive sign.” For a show built on the question of whether love can survive forever, the timing feels right.

The broken chalice is the obvious thread to pull. If the house is no longer protected, the werewolves that have been talked about all episode may stop being a rumor. Mort’s new friendship with McKenzie could also become more complicated.

Edwards teased more to come. She said there are “great guest stars,” that characters from Emma’s past may appear, and that viewers may learn more about the twins and their abilities. She also hinted that Phyllis is heading somewhere “people could never foresee or expect.”

Do you think the broken Wolfsbane Chalice will put the coven in danger?
