‘Euphoria’ Final Episode Shatters Viewership Record, HBO Confirms

HBO’s Euphoria has ended its run with strong viewership numbers, as the final episode brought in a large global audience and marked the conclusion of the popular drama series.

According to HBO, the third season finale, which also served as the series finale, reached 8.7 million cross-platform viewers in the United States within its first three days. This is slightly higher than the season premiere, which recorded 8.5 million viewers in the same time frame.

However, the most-watched episode of the season was actually episode three, which reached 8.9 million viewers over three days. Even though the finale did not top that mark, it still helped close out the season on a strong note.

HBO also reported that the final season has reached 25 million viewers worldwide so far. That number is expected to rise because HBO measures total audience performance over a 90-day window after each episode’s release. The company also noted that overall viewership for the series has increased significantly compared to previous seasons, with season two finishing at around 21.5 million viewers globally.

HBO shared that the growth is partly linked to the expansion of HBO Max over the past several years, which has increased access to the show across more regions and platforms.

The final season also included major story developments, including the deaths of several key characters. The ending sparked discussion among viewers, especially given the show’s long-running focus on addiction, mental health, and difficult real-life themes.

Series creator and showrunner Sam Levinson addressed the direction of the final season in an interview on the New York Times Popcast. He explained that changes were made after the passing of actor Angus Cloud. Levinson said, “Once [Angus Cloud] passed away, I had to reconceive the script and I thought, you can’t tell a story about addiction today without the very real consequences.”

He continued, “Most people don’t get a second chance. Fentanyl can just take you out in an instant. It wasn’t like when I was growing up; you could literally take pills off the street and you might have a bad trip or something, but you’d be fine. This is something that hits close to home for a lot of people in this country. So it felt like the responsible thing to do.”

The final season reflects that shift in tone, focusing more heavily on consequences and the realities of addiction, which has been a central theme throughout the series since its debut.

While the series has ended, HBO’s numbers show that Euphoria continued to grow in popularity through its final season, maintaining strong audience engagement right up to its conclusion.
