‘Euphoria’ Star Sydney Sweeney Is Reportedly the Frontrunner to Play Britney Spears

Hollywood has spent years speculating about who might eventually step into Britney Spears’ shoes for her long-rumored biopic, with names floated and dropped almost as quickly as they surfaced. Few casting conversations in recent memory have generated quite this much sustained fan interest.

That speculation traces back to Universal Pictures acquiring the rights to Spears’ bestselling memoir, ‘The Woman in Me,’ with ‘Wicked’ director Jon M. Chu attached to bring her story to the big screen. Now, according to a new report, Sydney Sweeney has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to play Spears in the long-gestating project. The claim comes from OK!, which says the film is moving forward again after months of uncertainty over its direction and Spears’ own level of involvement.

Per the outlet, the biopic is being developed with New Girl creator Liz Meriwether writing the screenplay, alongside Chu’s continued attachment as director. Sweeney is reportedly being considered for the lead role alongside other names previously in contention, including Addison Rae, Bailee Madison, and Kylie Schultz.

A source who spoke with OK! explained why Sweeney in particular has reportedly generated the strongest interest among decision-makers. “Sydney has become one of the names generating the strongest interest,” the insider said. “There is no final decision, but she has the profile, range and familiarity with Britney’s image that make her an obvious person for the filmmakers to consider.”

Beyond casting, the same report suggests the project itself has found firmer creative footing after previously stalling. The insider noted that Spears had understandable reservations about revisiting deeply personal chapters of her life, but that conversations around the film’s direction have become more productive in recent months.

According to the report, the intended approach centers the story around Spears’ own perspective, weaving her complicated family dynamics and the restrictions she endured during her conservatorship alongside the broader scale and cultural impact of her music career. Spears is expected to have significant input into the adaptation as it continues moving forward.

This isn’t the first time Sweeney’s name has been connected to the project, as she’s been mentioned as a potential contender in casting speculation dating back over the past year. Some fans have pointed to visual similarities between the two, as well as parallels in the intense media scrutiny both have faced at different points in their careers, as reasons the pairing makes sense.
