DCU is officially underway, with co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran mapping out a multi-year plan. This new chapter for DC films, television, and animation aims to create a more unified and cohesive storyline. The first major film in this new era is ‘Superman’, set to release on July 11, 2025, which will introduce a new Man of Steel played by David Corenswet. This movie is intended to be the true start of the DCU, setting the tone for a universe that balances well-known heroes with lesser-known characters.

This first phase of the DCU is titled “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” hinting at the wide range of stories to be told. The plan includes a slate of interconnected movies and TV shows. While some projects that were in development before Gunn and Safran took over have been continued, many are fresh takes on classic characters, recasting key roles to fit the new vision. This structured approach is designed to revitalize the DC brand and build a long-term, interconnected narrative for audiences to follow.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026)

DC

Following ‘Superman’, the next confirmed film is ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, scheduled for a June 26, 2026 release. The movie will star Milly Alcock, known for her role in ‘House of the Dragon’, as Kara Zor-El. The script is written by Ana Nogueira and will be directed by Craig Gillespie, who previously directed ‘I, Tonya’.

The film is based on a recent comic book series of the same name by Tom King. This version of Supergirl is expected to be a darker and more intense take on the character. Having been raised on a piece of Krypton, she witnessed great violence for the first 14 years of her life before arriving on Earth, making her a more formidable and hardened hero than past portrayals.

Clayface (2026)

DC

Set for release on September 11, 2026, ‘Clayface’ will be a villain-centric movie with a focus on horror. The script was written by Mike Flanagan, known for his work in the horror genre like ‘Doctor Sleep’. James Watkins, who directed ‘Speak No Evil’, is set to direct the film.

Described as a lower-budget horror film, it’s been hinted that the story will be a tragic tale centered around a version of the character who may not be entirely villainous. The movie is expected to have a body-horror element, drawing comparisons to ‘The Fly’. While Alan Tudyk voiced Clayface in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’, it has not been confirmed if he will play the role in the live-action film.

The Brave and the Bold (TBD)

DC

The DCU will introduce its new Batman in ‘The Brave and the Bold’. This film will be directed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed ‘The Flash’. A key part of the story will be the introduction of Batman’s biological son, Damian Wayne, as Robin.

The movie will explore the “very strange father and son story” between Bruce and Damian, who is described as an assassin that Batman takes under his wing. The film is based on Grant Morrison’s run of Batman comics. No release date has been set, and the project is currently in development.

The Authority (TBD)

DC

James Gunn has described ‘The Authority’ as a passion project. The film will focus on a team of superheroes with a more extreme and questionable moral code, who are willing to kill for what they believe is justice. The script is currently being written.

This film is significant because it introduces a group of largely unknown characters to a mainstream audience. Their intense methods will likely create conflict with more traditional heroes like Superman, exploring different philosophies on justice within the DCU. A release date has not yet been announced.

Swamp Thing (TBD)

DC

A ‘Swamp Thing’ movie is in development, with James Mangold (‘Logan’, ‘Ford v Ferrari’) set to direct. The project is described as a dark horror film that will explore the origin of the character.

The movie is part of the “Gods and Monsters” chapter, fitting in with the theme of exploring different tones and genres within the superhero framework. However, the project is currently on hold until Mangold finishes his other film commitments. No release date has been announced.

Wonder Woman (TBD)

DC

A new Wonder Woman film has been confirmed to be in development for the DCU. James Gunn has stated that a script is currently being written. This will be a complete reboot of the character, meaning Gal Gadot will not be returning in the role.

Details about the plot, director, and cast are still unknown. However, Warner Bros. Discovery considers Wonder Woman a major asset, indicating her importance in the future of the DCU.

Teen Titans (TBD)

DC

A live-action ‘Teen Titans’ movie is also in the works. The script is being written by Ana Nogueira, who also penned the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ screenplay.

While specific details are still under wraps, it is rumored that the movie will feature the core team members: Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy. This project has been long-awaited by fans and is one of the most anticipated films for younger audiences in the upcoming DCU slate.

Bane & Deathstroke (Rumored)

DC

There have been reports that a film centered on Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke is in development. A script from Matthew Orton, who worked on ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, is said to exist.

However, James Gunn has been coy about this project, neither confirming nor denying if these specific characters are the focus. At this stage, the movie remains a rumor with no director or cast attached.

Sgt. Rock (Rumored)

DC

A movie based on the World War II soldier Sgt. Rock has been mentioned as being in production. Luca Guadagnino was slated to direct the project.

The character is a seasoned soldier from countless comics, leaving many possibilities for a storyline. However, recent information on its development has been scarce.
