Every Major New Character in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Explained: Sinestro, Antaan, the Manhunters, Earl and Mogo
Two episodes into its run, HBO’s “Lanterns” has already introduced an overwhelming amount of new mythology, characters and cosmic threats to a story that started as a grounded murder mystery in small-town Nebraska. For viewers trying to keep track of who’s who, and what actually matters, the show has packed in enough deep-cut references to leave even dedicated comic readers scrambling for context.
That density is by design. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, “Lanterns” follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as their investigation into an alien incident in Rushville spirals into something much larger, pulling in villains, victims and cosmic threats that stretch back decades into Green Lantern comic history.
With so much thrown at audiences so quickly, here’s a breakdown of the show’s key new characters and concepts introduced so far, and what each one actually means for the story ahead.
Sinestro: Hal’s Fallen Mentor
Played by Ulrich Thomsen, Thaal Sinestro is Hal Jordan’s former mentor and, in the comics, arguably the most significant villain in Green Lantern mythology. Sinestro originally trained Hal before succumbing to the corrupting yellow energy of fear, ultimately leading a failed coup against the Guardians of the Universe that resulted in his formal expulsion from the Corps.
In “Lanterns,” Sinestro appears imprisoned in a space facility, and Hal visits him directly seeking information about the Manhunters. Showrunner Chris Mundy has explained that the writers were interested in exploring what Hal absorbed from Sinestro’s training, and how much of that influence has since been passed along, intentionally or not, to John Stewart.
Antaan and the Manhunters: The Season’s Central Threat
Played by Paul Ben-Victor, Antaan is an extraterrestrial character introduced as a survivor from a species targeted for genocide by the Manhunters, ancient robotic beings originally created by the Guardians of the Universe as a proto-Green Lantern police force before they turned violent and were ultimately replaced by the Corps. Antaan is described as devoted to exposing the truth and consumed by an unrelenting need to deliver justice on his own terms, with some fans speculating he shares traits with the comics villain Atrocitus.
The Manhunters themselves function as the season’s central antagonists, described in the show as capable of shapeshifting into any species and adopting their technology. Their brutal history of wiping out entire civilizations is what originally drew the Green Lanterns’ attention and intervention, and the revelation that a Manhunter killed Abin Sur, the original bearer of Hal’s ring, ties the current mystery directly into the franchise’s founding mythology.
Earl: Hal’s Unusual Houseplant
Amid all the cosmic stakes, “Lanterns” also finds room for a smaller, stranger detail: Earl Jordan, Hal’s half-sentient, man-eating alien plant. John discovers Earl while exploring Hal’s home in Coast City, adding a strange, almost comedic touch to Hal’s otherwise guarded personal life.
Mogo: The Living Planet Behind a Clever Password
While John explores Hal’s home, he also uncovers a hidden pocket dimension containing Hal’s old Green Lantern uniforms, unlocked using the phrase “Mogo doesn’t socialize.” That line is a direct reference to a classic 1985 comic story by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, which introduced Mogo, a sentient living planet and one of the more famously bizarre members of the Green Lantern Corps.
Beyond these central figures, “Lanterns” continues expanding its supporting ensemble. Nathan Fillion reprises his role as Guy Gardner from “Superman,” Laura Linney appears as one of the Guardians of the Universe in human form, and Kelly Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry Kane, whose family, including husband Billy Macon and father-in-law William Macon, ties directly into the town’s escalating mystery.
With eight episodes total and new installments arriving weekly, “Lanterns” shows no sign of slowing its pace when it comes to introducing new characters and mythology.
