September is stacked with new science fiction in theaters and on streaming. There are original features, international standouts making their U.S. debut, a 4K revival of a modern anime classic, and big returning series with fresh episodes landing weekly.

‘Motherland’ (2025)

In an alternate present, the state raises children in centralized facilities and calls the system fair and efficient. A by the book enforcer begins to question everything after uncovering a truth that the program was never meant to reveal. The film opens in the U.S. on September 12 in select theaters and on demand with a runtime of about one hour and thirty nine minutes.
‘Motherland’ is directed by Evan Matthews from a script by Nicole Swinford and is released by Vertical with production by MPI Original Films. The cast includes Miriam Silverman, Holland Taylor, and Nestor Carbonell, and the film played the festival circuit ahead of release which helped spotlight its world building hook around state run Children’s Centers.
‘Another End’ (2024)

Set in a near future where a grieving service can temporarily map the memories of the dead onto living hosts, a man uses the program to say goodbye to his partner and discovers how memory, identity, and desire blur under the rules of the technology. It opens in the U.S. on September 19 with a limited theatrical and digital rollout.
‘Another End’ is an English language sci fi drama written and directed by Piero Messina and it premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival. The cast features Gael García Bernal, Renate Reinsve, Bérénice Bejo, and Olivia Williams, and principal photography took place in Rome and Paris with a final cut running just over two hours.
‘Xeno’ (2025)

After an object falls from the sky into the desert, a teenage girl discovers an alien survivor and forms a bond while authorities and would be hunters close in. The film is slated for a wide U.S. theatrical release on September 19 with a runtime of about one hour and forty three minutes.
‘Xeno’ is written and directed by Matthew Loren Oates and produced by Hartbeat, with Blue Fox handling distribution. The alien was created with practical creature effects by The Jim Henson Company, and the cast includes Lulu Wilson, Omari Hardwick, Paul Schneider, Wrenn Schmidt, and Trae Romano, with production based in New Mexico and an original score by Ryan Taubert.
‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ (2006)

The modern anime classic returns to theaters in a new 4K restoration for three special nights on September 28, 29, and 30. It follows high schooler Makoto Konno who suddenly gains the ability to jump back in time and soon learns that small changes carry heavy consequences for her friends and for herself.
‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ is directed by Mamoru Hosoda and produced by Madhouse, based on the novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and music by Kiyoshi Yoshida. The 4K restoration also arrives on home video and digital in early September, bringing new extras and the best presentation the film has had in North America.
‘Gen V’ (2023– )

The college set spin off of ‘The Boys’ returns on September 17 on Prime Video with the first three episodes dropping the same day and new episodes arriving weekly through October. The story picks up after the fallout at Godolkin University and tracks how the school and its supes are reshaped by the power void left in the wake of recent events.
‘Gen V’ is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios with Michele Fazekas as showrunner and with executive producers that include Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. Returning cast members include Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li, Maddie Phillips, Asa Germann, and Sean Patrick Thomas, and season two introduces Hamish Linklater as the new dean while continuing to thread plotlines into the final season of ‘The Boys’.
‘Alice in Borderland’ (2020– )

The third season of the hit survival thriller streams globally on Netflix on September 25. Arisu and Usagi are pulled back into the games with the long hinted Joker stage coming into play which brings new rules and higher stakes than before.
‘Alice in Borderland’ is based on Haro Asō’s manga and is directed by Shinsuke Sato with scripts by Yasuko Kuramitsu and Sato. The series is produced by Robot with producers Akira Morii and Tomoki Takase and stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, with new and returning players joining as the story pushes toward its conclusion.
