Everything We Know About the Upcoming ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Movie
It’s official: Super Mario Galaxy will be the second movie in The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, and fans are buzzing with excitement.
From the release date and confirmed cast to teaser updates and plot hints, there’s plenty to know about this upcoming video game adaptation. Here’s a complete guide to what we can expect from Mario’s next big adventure.
1. The film was first hinted at having a different name

In May, NBCUniversal briefly announced the sequel under the name Super Mario World, but that listing was quickly removed. Shortly after, leaks suggested the real title. Twitter account Wario64 noticed that NBCUniversal had registered the domain supermariogalaxy.movie, indicating the official title is likely Super Mario Galaxy, named after the game that first introduced Rosalina.
2. The release is just around the corner

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled for theaters on April 3, 2026, nearly three years after the original film’s release on April 5, 2023.
3. The first teaser trailer for the movie has already been released

The first teaser for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie premiered during Nintendo Direct on September 12. While it doesn’t reveal much about the story, it shows Mario snoozing under a tree, a stained-glass image of Princess Peach, and a dramatic flight through the clouds leading up to the movie’s title reveal.
4. The original cast members are coming back

So far, the confirmed cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features only the returning actors from the first film. No new characters, including Rosalina, have been officially announced yet. The current cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
5. The Plot Remains a Mystery

Details about the plot for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are still under wraps, but the story will likely take inspiration from the classic Super Mario Galaxy game.
In the game, a Star Festival celebrating a passing comet is interrupted when Bowser attacks and kidnaps Princess Peach, taking her castle into space. Mario pursues her and meets Rosalina, the caretaker of small star-shaped creatures called Lumas.
She reveals that Bowser previously stole the Power Stars from her home, the Comet Observatory, leaving it powerless. Mario’s quest is to recover the Power Stars, restore the Observatory, and rescue Peach.
Illumination’s Chris Meledandri has teased that the film will expand beyond the game’s story: “While the Super Mario Galaxy games are the core inspiration for our story, this next film holds surprises for fans of every Mario era.”
