Ex-Activision Blizzard CEO Says Elon Musk Would Be the Perfect Game Company Owner
Former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently praised Elon Musk as the ideal owner for any videogame company, during an appearance on the Rushmore podcast, as reported by TWIV.
Kotick, who led Activision from 1991 to 2023, is known for his business acumen and for turning the struggling company into a $75.4 billion acquisition for Microsoft.
On the podcast, Kotick said, “Elon truly would be the best owner of any game company. No, he would. There’s not a person who’d be more qualified to build and run a game company.”
Musk’s experience with videogames, however, mostly comes from being a player rather than a developer. He has streamed games like Path of Exile 2 and played titles such as Quake and Diablo 4, though he has admitted to using account boosting services to play at higher levels.
Musk defended his approach, saying, “It’s impossible to beat the players in Asia if you don’t, as they do!”
Musk is also working on a gaming venture under xAI, his AI company. He claimed the company would release an AI-generated game in 2026 and suggested that fully AI-generated games could appear within the next three years.
Some industry veterans, like former Sledgehammer boss Glen Schofield, have been skeptical of Musk’s plans, calling them unrealistic.
Kotick continued to defend Musk when host Ari Emanuel suggested buying Twitter may have been a mistake. He said, “For the betterment of society he needed to actually own X.” Kotick also added, “No, he’s way too capable. The things he’s working on, there are too few people in the world that actually could do that. So those are the priorities of how do you actually save humanity, improve society, he’s got his priorities right.”
While Kotick’s comments highlight his confidence in Musk, critics argue that AI-driven games and a lack of development experience may not make Musk the perfect choice for running a game company.
