Extended ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Clip Gives John Walker the Last Laugh in the Great Captain America Debate
Captain America has been passed around more than almost any mantle in the MCU. Steve Rogers carried the shield first, Sam Wilson inherited it, and in between, a government-backed soldier briefly wore the stars and stripes in a way that nobody quite forgot. Putting all of them in the same room was always going to be awkward, which makes it a perfect target for a joke.
Marvel has leaned into that awkwardness in its latest marketing push for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. A new trailer arrived on Saturday, about 24 hours after a baseball-themed promo aired during the World Series. It centered on Thor rallying a gathering of heroes and Steve Rogers once again proving worthy of wielding Mjolnir.
Now an extended version of Ant-Man’s Captain America joke has been revealed, and it turns a quick gag into a fuller exchange. The 7-second clip shows Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang mid-conversation with Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, who delivers the punchline that he was also Cap for a minute.

The original beat is simple but effective. Ant-Man tries to wrap up a planning scene by asking whether everything is settled and addressing Steve Rogers as “Cap.” He then looks over at Sam Wilson, the current Captain America, and corrects himself.
That is when Walker, the former Captain America turned U.S. Agent, chimes in to remind everyone he held the title as well. The line lands because it is true, and because nobody in the room has an easy comeback. It is also a rare moment of lightness in a trailer otherwise built around Doctor Doom’s threat.
The joke works because of the history behind it. Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers was the first and longest-serving Captain America, and he handed the shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Walker, introduced in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, was the government-endorsed Cap whose clash with Sam and Bucky ended with the shield being taken from him.
Walker has since become U.S. Agent and a member of the New Avengers alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost and Danny Ramirez’s Falcon. Seeing all 3 men in a single frame is a first for the franchise.
Some fans have worried that Evans’ return could overshadow Wilson, and one analysis argues the joke helps defuse that concern. Having Ant-Man voice the audience’s own awkwardness acknowledges the situation head-on rather than ignoring it. Reports have also suggested Sam still has a meaningful role leading his own team of Avengers.

The film itself looks heavy. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, and the story brings together the Avengers, the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against a threat none of them can handle alone. Recent spots have focused on the idea of 3 teams standing together.
Jokes like this one help balance that weight. They suggest the Russo brothers want the movie to keep the banter that defined their earlier Avengers films, even as the stakes rise. They also give the cast a chance to play off decades of shared history.
The marketing has been relentless, with presales reportedly past $125 million and a December 18 opening that lands the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’. Short, shareable moments like this one help keep the conversation going. And if the response to this clip is any indication, fans are enjoying the humor as much as the spectacle.
