Ezra Miller Finally Addresses ‘The Flash 2,’ and the Answer Is Pure Uncertainty
Few DC films have carried as complicated a legacy as 2023’s ‘The Flash,‘ a movie that arrived with sky-high ambitions, a beloved multiverse concept, and the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, only to get overshadowed almost entirely by star Ezra Miller’s ongoing legal troubles. Despite those complications, the film still managed to deliver one of the more inventive time-travel stories DC had attempted on screen.
Unfortunately, that creative ambition didn’t translate to box office success, with ‘The Flash’ grossing just $271.3 million worldwide against a reported budget of $200 to $220 million. That underwhelming performance, combined with the shift to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, left the future of any potential sequel hanging in limbo for years, even though a script had reportedly already been written not long after the first film’s release.
That uncertainty hasn’t gone away, and Miller made that clear in a recent moment caught on camera. When a fan asked directly when ‘The Flash 2’ is coming out, Miller simply responded, “God only knows,” a blunt but honest answer that captures just how unresolved the sequel’s status remains years after the first film’s release.
That kind of noncommittal response tracks with everything reported about the project since Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios. Barry Allen’s storyline in the first film left him in an alternate timeline entirely separate from the current DCU continuity, and Gunn has never confirmed Miller as part of his ongoing plans for the franchise moving forward.
The uncertainty surrounding Miller’s future with DC extends well beyond just box office numbers or scheduling conflicts. Following years of reported legal issues, including an arrest on felony burglary charges in Vermont and other publicized incidents, questions lingered for a long stretch over whether the studio would even want to continue the character’s story with Miller attached at all.
Despite that speculation, Miller did make a rare public appearance at ‘The Flash’s Los Angeles premiere back in 2023, thanking Warner Bros. Discovery leadership and DC Studios’ Gunn and Safran directly for their support during that period. That moment offered a small sign that the door hadn’t been fully closed, even as the broader DCU continued moving forward without any confirmed plans for a direct sequel.

With Gunn’s DC Universe currently focused on titles like ‘Superman’ and other new franchise entries, ‘The Flash 2’ remains exactly where Miller’s comment suggests: an open question with no clear timeline in sight. Whether the character eventually finds his way back into DC’s plans, and whether Miller would even be the one to play him if he does, is still very much up in the air.
