‘F1’ Star Brad Pitt Opens Up About His “Dark Period” Amid Family Struggles
Brad Pitt has opened up about one of the hardest periods of his life, saying that problems involving his family left him feeling overwhelmed and unable to see a way forward.
In a new interview with Esquire, Pitt spoke about the emotional toll of what he described simply as “family stuff.” While he did not go into detail about every part of the situation, his comments come after years of public tension surrounding his divorce from Angelina Jolie and the changing relationships he has had with some of their children.
Pitt said there was one period when the pain became so intense that he understood why someone might think about suicide.
“I’ve never been suicidal except for one little period,” Pitt told Esquire. “And in that one little period, I just thought—I just couldn’t—just didn’t see a way out.”
The actor said the emotional pain felt almost impossible to escape. He described having a disturbing thought about death, but made clear that he did not intend to act on it.
“The pain was so oppressive that—I wasn’t going to act on this, but I could feel—I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief,” he said.
For Pitt, the experience was less about wanting to die and more about wanting the pain to stop.
“And I thought, Oh, okay, now I understand—I understand suicide, in the sense that it’s just relief. It’s just looking for relief from the pain,” he said. He also said that his instinct to survive quickly took over. “But I also think we have incredible survival instincts. And for me, that immediately kicked in,” Pitt added.
Pitt’s comments come after a long and difficult family chapter. His marriage to Jolie ended in 2016, and their divorce became a highly public and complicated legal battle. The former couple share six children, and their family relationships have continued to attract attention over the years.
Some of their children have also stopped using Pitt’s last name, adding another painful layer to an already complicated situation.
The actor did not directly discuss the details of his relationship with each of his children in the Esquire interview. Instead, he referred to the period broadly as “family stuff,” choosing not to turn the conversation into a detailed account of his private life.
Still, his words offer a rare glimpse into just how difficult that time became for him.
Pitt has also spoken in the past about making major changes in his life and dealing with personal struggles away from the spotlight. In the same Esquire interview, he discussed his relationship with alcohol and admitted that he is no longer completely sober after previously going seven years without drinking.
His latest comments show that, despite his fame and career success, Pitt has gone through deeply painful moments in his personal life.
Now, as he continues working on new movies, the actor appears more willing to speak openly about some of those difficult experiences, even while keeping many details about his family private.
