‘Facing El Chapo’ Just Became Netflix’s Biggest International Movie of the Year with a Staggering Debut

Netflix has had no shortage of breakout hits in 2026, from big-budget action spectacles to buzzy limited series that dominated the cultural conversation for weeks at a time. Most of those successes, though, came with major stars or established franchises already attached to pull audiences in.

That’s what makes the streamer’s latest phenomenon so unusual. A Mexican crime thriller with no massive marketing push and a cast largely unfamiliar to English-speaking audiences has quietly climbed to the very top of Netflix’s global charts, catching even industry watchers off guard.

That film is ‘Facing El Chapo,’ and it has now officially debuted as the biggest international movie of the year on Netflix, racking up 18,000,000 views across its opening 3 days on the platform. The film beat out every other non-English-language title by a wide margin, more than tripling the views of the second-place film during its debut week.

Directed by Chava Cartas, ‘Facing El Chapo’ follows federal police officer Arturo Carmona and his unpredictable veteran partner Héctor Rosales as they pull over what they believe is a routine stolen vehicle, only to discover the world’s most wanted man, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, sitting inside. What starts as a traffic stop quickly spirals into a life-or-death standoff, as the officers must decide whether to turn in the notorious drug lord or accept a life-changing bribe to let him go.

The film draws from the real 2016 operation to recapture Guzmán after his escape from a maximum-security prison, though it takes some creative liberties rather than sticking strictly to the historical record. Alfonso Herrera and Noé Hernández star as the two officers, with Hector Kotsifakis playing the infamous cartel boss himself.

Cartas, who previously produced the crime thriller ‘Counterattack,’ explained that the project came together after he and his team stumbled onto the true story behind the film. He said the tale of two police officers risking everything to capture the world’s most notorious drug lord felt like a story that needed to be told.

‘Facing El Chapo’ has managed to outperform some genuinely massive competition in the process. The film beat out ‘Don’t Say Good Luck,’ which topped Netflix’s English-language movie chart with 12,800,000 views of its own, meaning the Spanish-language crime thriller actually out-viewed the platform’s top English title for the same stretch.

Beyond the streaming charts, the film has also topped Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list in the United States specifically, landing ahead of established titles like ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and ‘The Great Wall.’ At one point shortly after release, it ranked as the number one movie on Netflix in 71 different countries simultaneously.

What makes the success particularly notable is that it arrived with minimal critical buzz. The film’s rapid rise happened before it had accumulated enough reviews to even generate an official Rotten Tomatoes score, suggesting word-of-mouth and audience curiosity about the true story are doing most of the heavy lifting.

The film’s momentum also comes at a moment when Netflix’s overall weekly viewership has been trending downward, making ‘Facing El Chapo’s’ breakout run even more of a standout story on the platform’s current chart.
