HBO is ready to roll the dice on a brand-new live-action series based on the massive hit game Baldur’s Gate. According to a recent report from Deadline, the network is officially developing the project with Craig Mazin at the helm. Mazin, who already brought The Last of Us to life for HBO, will serve as the creator, writer, and showrunner for this new fantasy adventure.

The show is planned as a direct sequel to the events of Baldur’s Gate 3 rather than a retelling of the game we already played. This means fans will get to see what happens next in the world of Faerûn after that epic ending. Mazin is a huge fan of the source material and has spent a massive amount of time playing the game himself.

After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created, Mazin shared in a statement. He also mentioned how much he loves Dungeons & Dragons and the work the game developers did. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it, he added.

Even though the show is a continuation of the game, the original creators at Larian Studios aren’t actually part of the TV production. Video game journalist Geoff Keighley shared the news on social media after talking to the team. Larian, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, tell me they have no involvement in the series, Keighley posted.

Mazin is working closely with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to make sure the series stays true to the D&D spirit. He expressed how much he wants to get the characters right for the longtime fans who love them. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property, he said.

But here’s one thing that likely won’t sit well with the fans. Video game journalist Geoff Keighley tweeted, “Larian, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, tell me they have no involvement in the series.”

This project is moving forward just as Mazin wraps up his work on the third and final season of The Last of Us, which is expected to finish filming later this year. While no cast members have been officially named yet, there are rumors that Mazin wants to bring in some of the original voice actors for cameos or even recurring roles.

The story is expected to focus on a new group of adventurers who cross paths with legendary characters like Astarion or Shadowheart.

This is likely why Larian doesn’t have any involvement, as the story will be brand new.

The show is still in the early stages of writing, so we probably won’t see it on our screens until at least 2027 or 2028. For now, fans can keep busy with the latest updates to the game and the upcoming season of The Last of Us. It will be interesting to see which characters from the game make the jump to live-action first.

Which character from the game are you most excited to see appear in the live-action HBO series in the comments?
