Fans Accidentally Spot ‘The Odyssey’ Star at Disneyland in a Wild Encounter
Theme parks have a funny way of leveling the playing field, turning A-list celebrities into just another face in the crowd waiting for a character meet-and-greet. It’s exactly the kind of place where a Hollywood star can blend in so well that even the family standing a few feet away has no idea who’s watching them.
That’s precisely what happened this past weekend at Disneyland, where one family’s ordinary outing turned into an unexpected viral moment. What they thought was simply a sweet keepsake video of their toddler meeting a beloved Disney character ended up capturing something else entirely.
Comedian Loryn Powell shared the video to Instagram on Friday, August 21, documenting her young daughter’s first-ever meeting with Goofy at Goofy’s Kitchen inside the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. In the clip, Powell’s husband kneels beside their daughter as Goofy, dressed in his signature chef attire, approaches to greet the toddler, who lights up, waves and eventually wraps her arms around the character in a hug.
It wasn’t until later that the family realized who else appeared in the footage. Standing just a few feet behind them, arms crossed and smiling as he watched the exchange unfold, was Matt Damon, dressed casually in a gray shirt, white pants and a black baseball cap.
Powell captioned the clip with a knowing wink at the accidental celebrity cameo. “POV you’re watching your husband and daughter meet Goofy for the first time but don’t realize Matt Damon is also watching your husband and daughter meet Goofy for the first time,” text over the video reads, while her caption joked, “When your daughter is more starstruck by Goofy than Matt Damon.”
Fans quickly zeroed in on Damon’s low-key appearance, with some commenters initially questioning whether it was really him before spotting a telling detail: his cap appeared to read “Artists Equity,” the production company Damon co-founded with longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck. That small giveaway helped confirm the sighting for skeptical viewers scrolling through the comments.
Reactions to the clip leaned overwhelmingly sentimental, with several commenters noting how genuinely present Damon seemed in the moment. “Aww and you can tell he was reminiscing on his babies meeting goofy for the first time,” one fan wrote, while another joked that Powell should list “Introduction to Goofy, witnessed by Matt Damon” on her résumé.
As it turns out, Damon had his own reason for being at Disneyland that day. The actor was spotted at the park on Thursday alongside his wife, Luciana Barroso, and their daughters Alexia, Isabella, Gia and Stella, celebrating Gia’s 18th birthday with a group of relatives and friends.
Photos from the outing showed the family wearing matching “Birthday Crew” shirts as they posed together in front of the park’s giant Mickey Mouse pumpkin display on Main Street, U.S.A. It’s unclear whether Damon’s appearance in Powell’s video happened during that same visit, given some differences in his outfit and headwear between the two sets of photos, but the timing suggests the actor was already deep into a family-focused trip to the park.
Powell later spoke about the moment, reflecting on how special the outing was for her family regardless of the unexpected celebrity cameo. “As you can tell we love dressing up for a good theme so taking our 2.5-year-old daughter to Disneyland for her first time was magical,” Powell said, adding, “Even if Matt Damon hadn’t been there.”
The wholesome mix-up comes not long after Damon opened up publicly about a very different topic: candidly discussing financial struggles earlier in his career. For fans, though, this latest viral moment offers a much lighter glimpse into his life, one where the Oscar winner is just another dad enjoying the Happiest Place on Earth from the sidelines.
