Fans Divided After Author’s Harsh ‘Star Trek’ Take Goes Viral
Andy Weir is facing backlash after comments he made about Star Trek, and he has now responded with a public apology.
The situation started after Weir appeared on The Critical Drinker podcast. During the conversation, he spoke openly about his thoughts on newer versions of the series. He admitted he was not a fan and used harsh language when describing them. He also mentioned that he had once pitched an idea to the franchise, which was rejected by its team, including executive producer Alex Kurtzman.
His comments quickly spread online and drew strong reactions. Some people felt he crossed a line by criticizing the work of others in such a direct way. Author Don Winslow spoke out on X, saying, “When you have your moment don’t use it to crap on other writers’ work… you owe him an apology.”
Soon after, Weir addressed the situation on Facebook. In his message, he apologized directly to Kurtzman. He wrote, “I feel like my quotes were taken out of context as salacious sound bytes.” He also said that he had tried to be humorous, but admitted it did not come across that way. He added, “I’m so sorry for that.”

Weir explained that he has always been very direct when speaking, and that he may not have been careful enough with his words this time. He said, “I’m a blunt person – always have been.” He also joked about not being used to public attention, saying, “In a couple months I’ll be back in my cave writing novels and no one will care again.”
The timing of the controversy comes as his work is getting major attention again. The film version of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, has become a big success at the box office, earning over $300 million so far.
This situation shows how quickly comments can spread and create problems, especially when someone is back in the spotlight.
This is a good example of how easy it is for words to be misunderstood or taken too far. Being honest is fine, but tone matters, especially in public. At the same time, it is also important that people can admit when they went too far.
