‘FBI‘ has never been shy about pulling its agents between the case file and the kitchen table. This week’s installment, ‘Atonement’, leaned hard into that tension, pairing a prison escape with a family decision that has been building for a while.

The ninth season has already reshaped the New York team. Last season ended with OA being fired, and the premiere found him adjusting to a new role while Maggie struggled to bond with her new partner, Isaiah Green. With OA now back on the team after his special assignment, the focus turned to Scola.

The ending of ‘Atonement’ is where the episode earns its title. A manhunt gives way to a bank standoff, and a quiet voicemail from Scola to Nina closes out the hour. Here is how it all played out.

The episode opens with an attack on a prison transport van that frees 8 female convicts. The ambush happened less than 10 minutes from the prison, in a blind spot with no cameras and no police. The attackers used military-style weapons and killed the driver. It was clearly planned.

Six of the escapees were caught quickly, and they pointed the team toward Genesis Perez, who ran with a gang. The agents suspected she and her husband had orchestrated the break. Both were arrested, but the team had it wrong.

The real mastermind was Laila Sarbani, whose lower-risk classification had made her an unlikely suspect. She was serving time for stealing money to help Afghan refugees, and her past includes analytical work tied to the U.S. military. She believes the Afghans who aided America were denied the security and promises they were owed, including green cards.

That grievance gave the escape a moral framework, but it did not make her methods any safer. Laila manipulated a priest into passing messages from prison, then dropped him once he stopped being useful. Her plan was to rob a bank and distribute the money to Afghan refugees.

The robbery turned into a hostage situation, and Scola entered the bank unarmed to negotiate. He suggested letting Laila escape so the hostages could be freed. It turned out to be a misdirection, as members of her crew posed as hostages and slipped away with $4 million.

Laila was arrested and an accomplice was caught, but one member got away with the cash. The team stopped part of the operation without recovering everything or accounting for everyone. All of it happened on Scola’s watch, which could cause him trouble in later episodes.

The personal storyline began early. Word spreads that Nina has been offered her own task force, with the power to build a team and manage a budget. Jubal called it a big step up, but there was a catch, because the job is in San Diego.

Scola eventually admits to Eva that Nina received the offer 4 days earlier and that he told her not to take it. He worried that uprooting their lives, with their son Dougie growing older, was a sacrifice the family might not survive. Eva pushed back, urging him not to stand in the way of Nina’s dream.

After the case, Scola leaves Nina a voicemail saying he has been thinking about San Diego and that she should take the job. He tells her it is worth it and that they will figure the rest out. Having watched the case slip through his fingers, he reverses his earlier advice.

The message is not a finished plan. The episode does not say whether Scola will move, try a long-distance arrangement, or how any of it affects his work in New York.

Nothing in the episode establishes an exit for John Boyd’s character. Scola supporting Nina’s offer is not confirmation that he is leaving the series. Shantel VanSanten is confirmed to return as Nina on November 16 in ‘Posterity’, which should show what the couple decides.

With 22 episodes in the season, the writers have plenty of room to explore the fallout. ‘FBI’ airs Mondays at 8pm ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+.

Did Scola make the right decision by encouraging Nina to accept the San Diego task force offer?
