Square Enix might be looking at bringing Final Fantasy XVI to Nintendo’s next console. This comes from a recent livestream where producer Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, and creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro made a quick comment about how Nintendo is the only platform left for the game.

This moment was pointed out on social media by user Genki_JPN and has sparked new rumors about a possible Switch 2 version.

While nothing official has been announced, fans are already getting excited and guessing that Final Fantasy XVI could be headed to Nintendo’s next system. For now, though, Square Enix is focused on another big release for Switch 2, the enhanced version of Final Fantasy VII Intergrade, which is coming this winter.

Intergrade is a new version of the 2020 remake of the original PlayStation RPG. It features improved visuals, action-packed gameplay, dramatic storylines, and the kind of huge swords Final Fantasy is famous for. It also includes the Episode INTERmission content, where players take on the role of ninja Yuffie Kisaragi as she sneaks through Midgar and battles the Shinra Electric Power Company.

Another Final Fantasy game that’s coming soon is Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, launching this September. It’s a refreshed version of the original tactical RPG with better menus, new voice acting, added difficulty settings, and quality-of-life upgrades like autosave and faster battles.

However, it won’t include the extra content from the War of the Lions version that released on PSP in 2007. That edition had a rewritten script, more job classes like Dark Knight and Onion Knight, extra cutscenes, and even multiplayer. All of that has been left out of this 2025 re-release.

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XVI is already out on PlayStation 5 and PC and recently launched on Xbox Series X|S. But according to Pure Xbox, the game hasn’t had the best start on Xbox in terms of sales.

This isn’t the first time Yoshi-P has mentioned Nintendo in relation to Final Fantasy. He previously talked about the possibility of bringing Final Fantasy XIV Online to a Nintendo console as well. But for now, Square Enix hasn’t confirmed anything about Final Fantasy XVI or XIV heading to Switch 2.

If a Switch 2 port does happen, it would be a big moment for Nintendo fans who’ve waited to play recent mainline Final Fantasy games on a Nintendo system. Square Enix seems more open than ever to expanding its reach, so maybe it’s only a matter of time.
