The controversy started during the Grammys when Billie Eilish won song of the year for her track Wildflower. While accepting the award on stage, she made a strong political statement that sparked immediate reactions online.

In her speech, she said, I feel so honored every time I get to be in this room. As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land. And, yeah, it’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter, and f*** ICE. That’s all I’m going to say. Sorry. Thank you so much.

Finneas was standing beside her on stage during the acceptance speech. Soon after the ceremony, clips from the moment spread widely online, and reactions were divided. Some praised her for speaking out, while others strongly criticized the comment.

Billie Eilish was not the only artist who used the Grammys stage to talk about politics. Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny also made a statement after winning best música urbana album for DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. During his speech, he said, Before I say thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out. We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans. Also, I will say to people, I know it’s tough to know not to hate on these days and I was thinking sometimes, we get contaminados, I don’t know how to say that in English. The hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love. So please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love. We don’t hate them. We love our people. We love our family, and that’s the way to do it. With love. Don’t forget that please. Thank you.

The debate around the Grammys speeches continues online, with many fans and critics still sharing their views. Finneas’ post on Instagram Threads has now become a major part of the conversation as the backlash continues to grow.
