According to production updates reported by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures coverage, development on a sequel started soon after the first film released on April 4, 2025. The original movie became a major box office success and quickly sparked conversations about continuing the story.
Director Jared Hess has previously said there were many ideas that did not make it into the first film. He explained that the Minecraft universe has endless possibilities because of its different biomes, mods, and characters, making it perfect for expansion.
