Fans of Dune have their first glimpse of the final chapter in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga. The first behind-the-scenes image from Dune: Part Three has been released, showing Timothée Chalamet back on set with the caption “DUN3 LOADING…”.

The third film in Villeneuve’s trilogy is based on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah and serves as a direct sequel to Dune: Part Two (2024).

Villeneuve returns as director and co-writer, continuing his collaboration with screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Production began in July, and Warner Bros. has set the movie’s theatrical release for December 18, 2026.

The returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides. New faces joining the ensemble include Robert Pattinson and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, who plays Leto II, Paul and Chani’s son, alongside Ida Brooke as his twin sister, Ghanima.

Filming kicked off at Origo Film Studios in Budapest before moving to Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi for desert sequences.

Unlike the first two installments, which were shot digitally, Villeneuve is using traditional film cameras for Dune: Part Three, with select scenes captured in IMAX format. This marks his first film shot on film since Incendies (2010), signaling a creative shift in how the director wants to conclude the trilogy.

Hans Zimmer, who composed the scores for the first two Dune films, is back once again to create the music for the epic finale.

The Dune saga has become one of the defining science fiction franchises of modern cinema, with Villeneuve’s adaptation praised for its scale, visual depth, and faithfulness to Herbert’s complex universe. Dune: Part Three is expected to bring Paul Atreides’ story full circle, exploring the consequences of his rise to power and the cost of prophecy.

It’s exciting to see Villeneuve staying true to his vision and finishing Dune on such an ambitious note. Shooting on film and bringing back this incredible cast suggests he’s aiming for something truly cinematic. What do you think, will Dune: Part Three live up to the hype and deliver a satisfying ending? Share your thoughts in the comments.
