That story takes place in the shadowy stretch of Middle-earth history between Bilbo’s farewell party and the Fellowship’s descent into the Mines of Moria, according to producer Philippa Boyens, who described the project to Empire as “quite an intense story” told through the perspective of Gollum himself. Given that specific timeframe, Wood’s return as Frodo was always expected to be limited in scope, and the actor has since confirmed exactly that.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Wood compared the experience of returning to the franchise to reconnecting with old friends rather than stepping back into a leading role. “It’s sort of like getting the band back together a little bit with that film,” Wood said, adding that his part in the story is “relatively small,” but that he was thrilled just to be back in New Zealand working alongside so many familiar faces from the original creative team.

Speaking with The Sunday Times earlier this year, Wood made clear just how personally invested he remains in the role, regardless of how much screen time it ultimately involves. “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able,” Wood said in comments reported by Variety, even while stopping short of officially confirming his casting at the time.
